I am a listy person and as I age I find I need lists more and more. I have searched the archives for a good fall decommissioning checklist but cannot find one. In the interests of uncomplicated sailing,I want to make sure I do not miss the important items. All boats need a million maintenance tasks at this time of year and a detailed list would be handy. Anyone know of one? Beneteau do not even seem to have one.

Where are you in relationship to Tsehum Harbour?

Just curious, how come you are going to decommission the boat for the winter? It doesn't get that cold there. No major freeze except for maybe 1 week max, and the sea water outside of the boat will keep the inside water above 32. Just pump out the holding tank, put a little antifreeze in the head, and that should do it. We shouldn’t need to drain the engine, raw water filter, etc. Around here, we have more mold and mildew problems than freeze problems. If you don’t use your boat during the winter, put a couple of goldenrods in your boat, or air circulators from West Marine, they are a flat round thing with a fan inside. You can also open all the lockers, ice box, and other enclosed areas to allow air flow. Stand your cushions on ends so they won’t collect moisture underneath. We use our boat during the winter, but not as often as during the summers, but at least once a month, maybe twice. During either Christmas or Thanksgiving, we usually like to go for a brisk sail, followed by going on the hook at somewhere secluded, cook a turkey in a warm cabin. What a joy.

Calling JC of Bainbridge Is

JC, My boat Tula is in Tsehum at North Saanich Marina slip S-59. I live in Calgary. Let's talk via my email at svtula1@shaw.ca or 403-519-3667. I will be at the boat tomorrow afternoon for 4 days in the Gulf Islands. Peter

Yeah, c'mon, Peter

I'm with JC. There are too many sunny 50 degree days in winter to waste them. We put a couple of stable space heaters on the boat when in the slip to keep the mildew from forming and things from freezing up and go out at least once a month all winter. Hope to see ya out there. Decommissioning

West Marine usually comes out with a free handout around this time of year. Use it as a guide and make up your own.

Peter, I know exactly where you are at.....

....well, sort of. I know the marina location anyway. Been there. You sure have a long way to drive to visit your boat. How many hours of driving? Gulf islands are great. I like it much better than San Juan islands. More hidden coves, and a lot less people, and friendly people too. We usually scramble and get us up to the Gulf islands as quickly as we can, then we slow down and relax. We were planning on going up to the Gulf islands next week, but work issues came up and we will have to defer it to another time. Happy sailing.

Hey J C, ditto on the Gulf Islands...

Although there are so many new places that I've been discovering in the San Juans that I have not been to yet. These past two seasons we joined a small group of skippers (AMEE fleet) on a 700 mile seven week cruise of the 6,000 islands in the Discovery Island Group. Terry
