Fake Teak

I've been toying with the idea of refinishing the deck in a couple years. As such, I'm also considering some other options for the non-skid areas. After reading several articles, I decided to try a product from Plasdeck in Ohio (USA). I made patterns of the two areas at the aft end of the cabin top and sent them to the PlasDeck people. They sent me both pieces, some adhesive, and a link to instructions on their website.

The installation went incredibly smooth and it looks remarkably real. Although I struggled with the decision to put a plastic product on the boat, I eventually realized that the boat is essentially plastic. The non-skid properties and low maintenance of the faux teak is amazing. I haven't yet committed to replacing all of the non-skid areas with PlasDeck, yet. However, when my better half saw it, she immediately said we should put it throughout the deck and cockpit. (Of course, when she says "we" she means me.)

Although I read about several other faux teak products, I can only comment directly about the Plasdeck. I'll get some photos the next time I'm at the boat and post them here.

Jack,
Have you posted any pictures of it yet? I would really like to see how it came out. Did you look at any other vendors and compare prices? We have a company out here (San Diego) called Yacht Deck and I've seen their samples. It's about 3/16" thick and seems like the weight would add up if you did the whole deck. Does look good though.
Thank,

Hi Ric,

I'll get some pictures this week. I compared prices with two other vendors. Plasdeck was competitive. However, they weren't the cheapest. I liked their product (look, texture, installation), and the fact that they seemed to be the only one I could find that was actually made in the US.

You're probably right about the weight...but I can't imagine it will even be 50 extra pounds. I'm willing to offset it by keeping a couple extra cases of beer and a case of wine in the bilge.

Jack,
Your bilge must be bigger than mine. :) I Look forward to seeing the pictures.
