Ive been searching all over the web. I need to replace my sole. The plywood is ok, its the veneer thats screwed up. Id like to replace it with a faux veneer. Where can I buy it and what is it called? My father-in law saw a tv show the other day called ship-shape tv and they were redoing a sole with the same stuff. it came in 4x8 or 4x10 rolls and was like a plastic or vinyl laminate. The company they got it from was in florida, but he didnt remember the name. it was like $140/sheet. thanks, b

Lonseal...

...is the product name I think you are referring to. Here is a link to the Defender site where it can be purchased. Also, I'm sure any large flooring company could order it for you; just go in knowing exactly what you want. Rick D.

Your Father-In-Law saw on Ship Shape World Panel Products, Inc. I saw it yesterday morning, looked on their web site as I plan to redo my cabin as well. They have wood, wood vaneer, and vinyl in many wood types. Best to you on your project. Mike

Do you really want this stuff in your boat?

You can get real wood 1/4 inch thick for 40 square feet for $140. That is 3.50 dollars per square foot. Get the real McCoy for the same price and have something worth looking at. I know that the hulls of our boats are plastic but make believe wood on the cabin sole ?

Before there was plywood there were

trees and then there were saw mills that converted trees into boards. Pick your species and the planks even Honduras Mahogany isn't going to cost much more than your picture of wood.

Ross, It's Dealers' Choice

I would never try to convince someone to use a vinyl product vs, a wood laminate. I would always assume its their boat, their money and their brain. I simply decided based upon my evaluation of: durability, maintenance, priorities, appearance and expense. My panels are complex. The underlying plywood was repairable. For me to reproduce the panels would have involved a large chunk of time and hassle. To have them reproduced would have been a much larger expense and a lot more time. The sources of the water damage had been repaired. The product is unarguably very durable and is used commercially. It has excellent non-skid properties. I no longer have to look at all the dings after a race, or when someone drops a beer, or scrapes a foot with a stone in it. I don't have to spend bunches of time color-matching sun bleached panels. It looks good enough and I can spend my time on other portions of the boat. My boat, my money, my call. I made the right choice for me. Others may choose otherwise, and that's just fine. RD

What ever floats your boat.

If you are content with what you have that is fine with me. I am just very pleased with having wood in my world.

One thing I've noticed is that the Lonseal looks as good as the real thing, better than any teak veneer I've ever seen and far better than the fake looking plastic teak Hunter et al now use on contemporary soles and cockpit seats

Plas-Teak

A buddy of mine spent about a month decking his 44-footer with Plas-Teak. It looks spectacular. No screws, all glued down and properly caulked. Fraction of the cost of real teak. No-brainer. I think Plas-Teak is made out of defective condoms and used grocery bags. Looks like a million dollars.
