Fake Documentation Renewal Notice

Received my renewal notice for $26 with a return address of National Vessel Notification Center, PO Box 1119, Falling Waters, WV 25419-1119. Looks legit.
That is the correct address.

It may seem odd that the USCG has an office in West Virginia as it is not known to be a state with a large boating population. However, if you look at a map, you will see Falling Waters is about as close to DC as any place in WV. Senator Robert Byrd from WV was very good at directing benefits to WV and managed to locate the office in his home state.

It was quick to process. I thought the site has been improved, making it easy to fill in the info and make a credit card payment. I think I got my new documents in the mail in about 10 days. You can print a receipt from the website.

They are expanding their offerings to recreational boat owners who want more than a 1 year document. See the site info here.
Of note, the document is with the current owner. It will cost $26 per year, no multi year discounts. The document is not transferable non refundable should you sell in year 3 of the 5 year document period. The new owner will need to buy their own document using the bill of sale and the previous owners signed USCG transfer of ownership form. They are a stickler for ALL the paperwork.

Curious. Just how does documentation get terminated without selling the boat? I understand it is instantly terminated with the sale. New owner has to reapply.

Don't pay the renewal fee. The Documentation number remains with the boat even forever. The Doc number is assigned as soon as the initial application is received. For an example of a boat that is has a Doc number, but never had the process completed search for OMF Ontario in the registry.

They had our correct vessel name and documentation number.
I certainly do not have a dog in this fight, but as an outsider I wonder how this company is getting the necessary and detailed information to mail out to folks?

When I purchased my boat, the documentation number was in limbo. I tried to document my boat. Due to the lack of paperwork completion by the previous but short period owner, I could not document the boat. I needed to get the previous owner to clear the paperwork before the Documentation Center would process my request. They are all about maintaining a record of ownership.

If the record is lapsed the USCG still recognizes the last owner as owner of record. If you buy the boat you need the owner of record to sign the boat over to you. Think real estate property title. Until all the paper work is complete you can not document the boat.

This is not always the case with boat titles at the state level.

If you dont renew the USCG documentation, be sure to have the boat registered in your home state. You will be required to display the state registration number and current registration decal on both sides of the bow topsides. A state title may also be necessary; especially if there is a ships mortgage. Better check on that issue in your state’s boat registration department.
