I am new to sailing. This last season was my first on the water and this winter is my first on the hard. I have notice a cracks where the keel meets the bottom of the hull. I am aware that these are two pieces and I should consider redoing it. The question I have is, if it is not big can I get one more season before doing it? If I should do it is it easy enough for someone who has never done this to do it? Should I pay someone to do it? If so how much does something like this cost? Thanks

Hello there Seekswind.It would help if you could tell us what size of cracks you are refering to.Some Oday keels were encapsulated into the hull. This means they were filled from the inside.Photos would help. Please give size and age of your boat.Many times problems were specific to a particular model.

Keel Cracks on 28
The 28 had an encapsulated keel. As stated above that means no outside joint. It looks like this is a problem on some 28's One of our members Rodney Schaffer has repaired the problem on his 28. It is a big project to do this right. Maybe Rodney will jump in here and give you some directions on how to help. That being said it needs repaired before going back into the water. The cracks on Rodneys boat were in the front leading and rear edge of the keel. You might want to check to see if any water got into the keel itself. If so you need to drill some holes and drain. If you don't the water will freeze, if you are in an area where the weather gets cold enough. You can tap on the keel and if you hear a dull sound you mave have water in the keel. It will sound just like a soft spot on the deck would. Good luck with your repair.

Are you sure all O'Day 28s were encapsulated? When I look at the crack it looks similar to all of the Keel bolt ones that I have seen on the Hard. I just want to make sure as it sounds like I would need some additional help with this and I want to make sure that if I do I budget for it.

To the best of my knowledge they were all encapsuslated. Real easy to check. Lift up you cabin sole floor board. If you have keel bolts you will see them real easy. You sure you have a 28? The 272,30 and 302 were bolt on keels. The 27 and 28 were encapsulated.
