1984 Hunter 31Discharge nipple on holding tank is weeping. Existing tank is suspended under foreberth. Does entire foreberth have to be cutout and replaced with new plastic tank located underneath
Craig:I believe that the tank is made of fiber glass. I would seem to me that you could do a couple of differnt things here.1. Pump the tank and flush as well as possible. Maybe even a strong bleach treatment to try to kill everything before you move to the next step. Then remove the cover under the v-berth. Make sure you have eye protection and a gas mask (yuk). Then once the tank is cleaned out and dry you should be able to put a fiberglass patch on the fitting.2. Do the same as number one but plug the hole completely and re-drill a hole in the tank and use a thru hull fitting. This would give you the option to increase the vent size to get some more air into the tank.I am sure many of us will be faced with this exact problem over the next several years on this vintage boat.
If it's fiberglass, Steve's suggestion will prob'ly work. If it's aluminum, don't even consider trying to repair it...'cuz urine is so corrosive that the first leak is ONLY the first one. If it's polyethylene (plastic), it isn't repairable 'cuz nothing will bond permanently to poly. .
Where exactly is it leaking? Can you tell?I had a leak around the hose on the discharge nipple (84 H31) after replacing my waste hoses. After cussing a lot, cleaning a lot and removing the hose, I used lots of teflon tape and got it to stop. Sounds like yours might have just started on its own, that's why I'm interested.Don
