The blue striping on my 1983 H34 located on the hull just under the toe rail is faded and chipped badly. I just bought the boat last June and when I've looked at other Hunters of the same vintage several have a similar look. I'm going to be working on the appearance of the hull over the winter. Has anyone had any success either removing the striping all together or doing something to make it look better? Thanks.

I just removed all of the stripes on my 28.5 and you can plan on about 7-8 hrs of work. Dependent upon where the stripes are, some come off easier than others. The sun can really bake these on. The tools I used were a razor scraper and a product called an ERASER. The eraser is like a gum eraser that you put on the end of a drill and you just go after it. You will probably need 4 of these. They can be purchased at an auto paint supply store. Follow up with adhesive remover which can also be purchased at the auto store. New stripes can be purchased over the internet. I have included one site below. You will not be able to duplicate exactly but I am taking advantage of the situation and changing the colors of the stripes and replacing the original canvas to individualize my boat. There is also some information on the photo forum you can look at. Do not try and put new stripes over the old because they will show all the imperfections. Good luck.

I did that with our 87 model . Used a heat gun and a plastic scraper to remove the old. That is the tough part. Used acetone to get the old glue off. Then I used masking tape to mark my line. This part is very important to get a straight line on a 34 ft boat. I used 2 inch tape from 3m. I worked very nice for me. I put on two rows and after two seasons still looks like new. craig in mpls.

Gelcoat Stripes are not Removable

The gelcoat is fairly thick so I wet sanded them with #400 and #600 paper and used Poliglow on the stripes and hull. Polish your's up or cover them with tape or paint. Removing them like described on other vessels won't work. There is a white stripe inside the blue area on my boat which is tape (and removable) have fun Barry s/v "PER DIEM too"

Try goo gone to remove the glue!
Joe: Barry indicated that the stripes are gel coat. On my H'31 they are tape. The eraser is the way to try to remove this stuff. I have a post in the photo forum and it give some details on the use. Be sure to wear a long sleeve shirt and eye protection. One of members had one come apart on him. When you get done, try using Goo Gone (which you can get a K-mart, Wal-mart etc).

Gel Stripe
Some of the stripes were gel coat on my 28.5. The waterline one which was long ago painted over to raise the waterline. At the very top there is a gelcoat stripe which was covered over by blue tape. Strange, but it gives an excellent reference point for putting on the new stripes. This is a boring project but when finised should make your boat look newer. Hopefully using Poliglow or Island girl will bring back the gel coat to like new condition. Fortunately, my boat has always been kept waxed and there is no oxidation. I am planing to sell it in the spring but may not once I do the cosmetics. I t is a great sailing boat now that I have it all tuned up.

removing stripes
I did this on my 84' Hunter 31, I used both heat gun, and the eraser, the heat gun work good on the wide blue stripe, and I used the eraser on the one that had three sripes together. I used the lines left by the old tape for a guide for the new tape.
