I have a 2002 Hunter 410 with the factory installed propane tank to fuel the stove/oven. It has a guage in line just after the tank valve towards the stove/oven that reads in PSI. It currently reads just over 100 PSI. Can anyone tell me what PSI is time to refill? Last time I took it to be refilled the guy told me I had a lot more gas in there. Unfortunately, I had not paid attention to what the guage read before I took it to be refilled.

Thanks in advance, this board is a great resource!

Propane is liquified

in the tank. Because of that, pressure is related to temperature, not capacity. It will read the same pressure until all the liquid has evaporated. When the pressure guage starts to drop the tank will be empty.

The gauge is for leak detection

The gauge is for checking the syastem for leaks. Turn on the tank valve, turn on the solenoid valve note the gauge pressure then turn off the tank valve and leave the solenoid valve on and recheck the gauge in 15 minutes if the pressure has dropped use a mixture of water and a few drops of liquid soap to track down the leak.

The only way to check the quanity is to weigh the bottle

The "Rule of Thumb" is 1lb per person per week for three cooked meals a day. (Your mileage may vary)

We have a 10 lb tank, two people, use the boat most weekends and do a 1 week trip every summer and have never run out. We fill the tank every year right before the the trip.

And yes, it is mainly for testing of leaks

I forgot to add that this guage is mainly for testing leaks, and to see if your LPG safety switch is working as it should.

I hav always had CNG...

..and it will read differently than propane. What we did because we always filled it when the guage read 100PSI (and this was true) was to have the bottle refilled. I didn't like wasting the end of the bottlr, so we bought a spare. That bottle cost $250.00 but we never ran out. And that was the cost we paid. If it's not too expensive, buy a spare tank and keep it in a safe place until tank #1 nearly runs out, or does!

Propane tanks

Nothing to add to what has already been said. What I have done is get the fiberglass tanks that are advertised on this site. They are lighter and rust proof. You can also visually see how much propane is left in the tank. I had to modify my locker to accommodate the larger tanks.

Thanks for all the responses.

A will get it filled at the start of next season and weigh it. I also like the idea of having an adapter to attach a "Baby tank", as we carry a couple of those for the barbeuce. Thanks to all!

One thing to point out

CNG is not LPG. Compressed Natural Gas is NOT condensible. As such it needs to be compressed to high pressure (Like air in a scuba tank) and as such, a pressure gauge will tell the user of the product remaining in its VERY high pressure vessel. Propane on the other hand is condensible and liquefies (like refrigeration gases. (that's why they work)) But a pressure gauge can only work for leak checking, as stated. When you see a propane LEVEL gauge it's really a mechanical gauge connected to a float that rides (or floats) on top of the liquid. Did that come out of my keyboard OK?

Joe, Are you saying

a ten pound tank will last you a month? When we are on a trip a tank will last a week. Usually supper is eaten out at whatever port we make. Should I be checking for a leak?
