Some of us understand the security and data mining of facebook. I do not use it for security reasons. And their data mining becomes a big security issue.
If you enjoy being a slave to big brother, go ahead and use Facebook and other social media. However, the harm potential in future is there to be evaluated and appreciated.
Yes, that same can be applied to this web site, but it will first be filed under sailboats. Futhermore, the supercomputers have to digest this site and interpt data here first. Whereas, the Facebook programs quickly digest Facebook data.
And some evil people, and there are evil people, routinely search and mine Facebook data.
And the same issues reside with Google and its data mining.
Use a less efficient and less intrusive search engine when you can.

I agree with you Ed. I have a wall on Facebook but I don't divulge too much info about myself because I don't trust them. They use ploys to trick you into giving them information that can be used by spammers and telemarketers. I'm not fond of Google either but they control Youtube which is one of my favorite sites for learning. I think that we all should all be wary of Facebook.
While I understand that Facebook and that ilk is most likely the future of how humans will socialize, communicate, and work, I have discovered that I can be absent from Facebook and live my life just fine. I'm not quite as paranoid as Ed, but I can't find any fault or misguidance in his response.
My two short trials on Facebook just put me in contact with a bunch of my 'friends' 'friends', and as it turns out 99% of them were misinformed social justice wannabes. I'm sorry, but I can't abide ignorance as well as I used to.
So while Facebook was an inevitable result of the Internet I plan on holding out as long as possible.

I am very active on Facebook as are alot of other cruisers and live aboards. My boat has her own page " s/v Knot Looking Back" and I am "Tori Taylor"

I'm on facebook as well. I can manipulate my info to throw "them" off. It's what you give "them" to "mine" that makes the difference. Facebook has been a valuable tool for me to link up with old friends and family (big family).

My wife has a Facebook page and after meeting several cruisers, I can see the merits of having one. It is much easier now that cell phones upload just about everything directly to them. It is rather amazing how easy they have made them to communicate with people.
I use it to share pics and messages with friends and family who are all over the country, but the info I share is minimal and you have to be a friend to see anything on my wall. No apps, either; that stuff is all about mining user info.
This reminds me- whenever I visit my dad it seems like I uninstall a jillion apps and toolbars he's picked up along the way.

This thread finally got me to create a Facebook page SV Recess. I have not created the content yet. I am sure my Facebook advisor, the wife, will help me out. She already has ideas about creating a library of our sailing videos. She is looking at how to chart where we may be cruising currently.
Any other ideas of what would be good content on a Facebook page about your sailing?
