Fabricate new rudder post and fingers, what material?

Instead of butt welding the fingers to the post cut slots for the fingers to slide inside the pipe This may give a little more strength to the assembly if you are worried
Interesting idea. As long as the weld is water tight, it would work.

On larger rudders we will taper the shaft by using a plasma torch cutting a taper wedge. Then will flatten the new shaft, and stich weld. Carefully staying away of the upper portion as the welding can distort the machine work. We then will develop the armature using 308 grade fingers generally 2” x 6” x 1/4
