We are interested in purchasing a Hunter 31 and have looked at two this past weekend. Both boats seemed to have evidence of mold on the fabric liner in the cabin. How can this be corrected? Have any of you current owners out there ever replaced the fabric liner inside the cabins of your boats? Thanks for any information you can share. We have been Catalina owners in the past so are looking forward to learning about the personalty of the Hunter.

Try cleaning it first!

Try cleaning it first. You may want to consider having it done professionally too. If that does not work, then you can replace it. There are several places that sell the material. Another option would be gluing battens on the inside of the hull and screwing or nailing on wood strips. This may be a big job, but it would really make the interior look nice. If you use wood, you could also put some insulation between the hull and the strips.

Head lining

I do not recommend stripping out the old headliner as it will be a very difficult to peel out and some pieces may be impossible to pull out unless you scrape it. If the old headliner is still well attached simply use a good fabric glue spray and apply the precut pieces of the new liner over the old ones. Let us know how you did as I have myself been thinking of doing just that in my v berth and quarter berth. I also own a H31 hul 509. Good luck Ed

Greenmachine

on my former H31, the headliner was very, very moldy when I bought it. It's a real problem, although not a deal killer. I bought one of the small greenmachines and used every cleaner known to mankind on it to clean and clean and clean. I ultimately made plans to remove it but sold the boat instead. (and bought another Hunter.) If you see how moldy it is behind the headliner, you will do whatever it takes to get it out.

Fabric Liner - removed

I own a 1984 Hunter 31 that I purchased in 2002 and the liners in the aft berth and V-berth were both badly stained and black with mold. I tried to clean both areas but had no success using a variety of cleaners. I then decided to remove the liners. This proved to be a very difficut job as the glue holding down the liner is very tough and the liner material would sometimes tear. Also, some pieces of cabinitry were installed over the liner, so the liner had to be carefully cut away in these areas. Once removed, the hull sides revealed additional mold under the liners (they were almost completely black from mold). I cleaned these areas using a bleach/water combination and painted the area white. This has improved the interior look, and eliminated the musty odor which had been present. The mold has not returned (now going on 1 year). Next steps will be to line these areas with wood to finish them off. If the cloth liners are stained black, it is likely that the mold exists under the liners as well as on top. Try pulling back an area out of sight to check this. Covering the old fabric with new may not solve the problem if this is true. Best of luck in solving this one - John
