For anyone who might be interested, after my last two outings, I have decided to add EZ Steer to my boat. I called them to request more specific instructions on what I needed to measure and who I could purchase it from. The news that I have is that they have altered the design of the kit for the 260 so that it now clamps aroudn the rudder post - so you no longer have to drill holes in the rudder for installation. It has made my decision on this purchase a little easier :) The sad part is WestMarine is no longer one of their dealers. So it will definitely be mail order from some place I have never heard of.

report

I have a home made system that works but if it ever breaks I would consider EZ steer. Please report to us how it works out. Especially how it feels steering when the motor is out of the water. Corky

more EZ steer info would be great...

I have a home made connector that I need to disconnect when I tilt the motor (2001 Honda 9.9) out of the water. I may switch to the EZ steer if I don't have to disconnect anything when I tilt the motor out of the water when sailing (to reduce drag/prop hum). Does the motor tilt towards the side (as if turning to starboard) so as to avoid kinking the remote cables with the EZ steer connected and still able to steer with the rudder??

EZ Steer works great

I installed the EZ steer on my 2003 260. It goes on a Honda 9.9 long shaft motor. One piece is on the lower shaft of the motor & the other is on the rudder shaft. The adjustable rod connects the two with quick disconnect ball & socket type connectors. I leave mine connected all the time. Hardest part was taking measurements to order it from EZ Steer, but in the end just tell them to send you the long one. Making it shorter by cutting is very simple. It is easier to install the brackets, measure center to center of the pins & cut it to fit than it is to guess the size before the parts arive! You do not have to disconnect when the motor is pulled up & it simply shifts as the wheel turns. It has no impact on stearing. Only slight problem is you have to install connection on rudder shaft slightly off center to allow the rudder to go up into the trailering position. This limits the motor turning radius slightly in one direction only- but it is not a major drawback. I will try to post pictures in a couple of days.
