I did some checking in the archive for removing painted lettering. I came across EZ Off as a solution that works well. This information however, is over a year old. Has anyone since used EZ Off to remove hailing port or boat name?

Some types of easy-off are based on sodium

hydroxide and others are based on a variety of esters. Most paint removers are solvent based but the new generation of paint removers is very effective although somewhat slower.

They use it all the time

at the marina. EZ off is a brand name and I know it works on painted lettering. It will not remove vinyl letters. It will not remove Awlgrip paint. If the paint has been on a long time, it will leave a shadow, that will have to be removed by wet sanding. Go easy with the sandpaper. Drop it to where you can just see the shadow of the old letters. These will completely go away in time. Fair Winds Cap'n Dave

I did

Hello, I used EZ off in the spring of 2005 to remove the pained on letters on my boat. The EZ off worked very well. There were still some faints marks from the paint, but not too bad. If you do use EZ off, be sure to wear long rubber gloves and eye protection. Spray it on, let it sit for 5 minutes, then scrape and rub it off. I found that a plastic scraped worked best. That, and lots of rags did the trick. Before EZ off I tried polishing compound, automotive compound, and acetone. Nothing worked. Good luck, Barry Barry Lenoble Noble Prize Mt. I have uses E Z Off to remove logos and names off of trucks etc . worked like a charm, where buffing wheels with rubbing compounds did next to nothing.E Z

EZ Off

Another vote for EZ Off! I used it last year and it worked great. You may have to use two or three applications for some of the more stubborn paint but it will take it all off. If you use it in direct sunlight, it will leave a faint yellow stain on the gelcoat. You can used Soft-Scrub and that will take off the yellow and any other paint left overs. It has a mild abrasive but is more gentle than sand paper.

I used it

it worked wonderfully. I wasn't sure about how harsh it is on gelcoat so I made sure that i washed it down with lots of water afterwards.
