Eye in the sky?

Saturday afternoon was warm and breezy on the bay ... barely another soul out there. After a very quick run to my favorite anchorage, the way back was hard on the wind with just the genoa out and reefed. I thought this lens of refracted light was a bit unusual. It was more like an eye than just a small part of a rainbow. Besides there wasn't any moisture in the air. Clouds have moisture though. The camera didn't quite catch how luminous it was.

Wow! Very cool effect.

Years ago, I drove my old Tacoma right through the end of a rainbow, on Interstate 75. Watched it coming for miles. My understanding is that this is "impossible", but it happened. I bought a lotto ticket immediately when I got off the highway, just in case. ;)

Looking for the "pot" at the end of the rainbow ? :pimp:Once we were anchored off the Bitter End Yacht Club in BVI, the rainbow went down to the water between us and the YC. Very nice effect.

Yes, it's too bad that the camera just doesn't pick up enough of the colors that you see, not even to bring them out in post-processing, I've deleted lots of photos that just didn't capture what I was seeing. Still, it's a nice memory, it's always pretty hazy around here, I'm on the glide path for the airport and don't really get pretty sky's with all the jet exhaust.

It's called a sun dog. There should be another on the other side of the Sun.

We see sun dogs all the time, usually when theres a larger than normal difference in air temperatures between the ground and someplace higher.

those seem to be pretty common out here in the west, or it would seem that way to those of us who are always looking skyward... I have several photos that I have taken of them over the years. and its like you say, the camera lens cant do them justice, as some are very bright and colorful.
im not sure, but it is my opinion that they are part of a large halo around the sun due to the moisture in the air, and at that particular spot, the angle off the clouds is just right to give a good background so that you can see the reflection...

BTW.. it appears there is Land far off on the distant horizon.... where would that be located?

I was about half way across Barnegat Bay just north of the channel to the inlet. Looking southwest is about 2 miles across to the very low land stretching along the west shore of the bay. Behind me, about 2 miles is the inside shoreline of the barrier island (Long Beach Island) .... LBI in Jersey vernacular. I had about 6 miles to make it home, and I made it at dusk, with help from iron genny when I had to turn into the wind.
I notice that my photo has the "green flash" ... not the real thing! ;)

Very nice. I saw that effect once in cirrus clouds off a full moon. That was pretty remarkable.

We had read about sun dogs but in 15 years of going to LBI and cloud watching we didn't see one until a couple of years ago.
Then Saturday a week ago we were on the Barnegat Bay for our last sail of the season. We were slowly heading west from LBI towards our marina hoping to catch a good sunset. A sun dog appeared in front of us. It faded and my son dog, Copper, came over to my side of the boat to say hi.
A bit before sunset the sun dog returned. It made for a great season ending sail.
I pulled my sails and started emptying the boat on Saturday. Should have gone sailing like Scott.

Looking at your attached file, it sure looks like a double exposure of the sky and a nipple...hmmm

Those are fantastic photos! I didn't even think to look on the other side of the sun as it was obscured by the genoa. In fact, I was pretty much gauging my direction by just barely keeping in the shade from the genoa.

i'd steal these great pics for my SBO profile, but it would be unseemly.
