I am thinking of putting an (extra) arch aft on my P-42 to create a platform for a wind-turbine, solar panels and radar. Having this arch I prefer to use at as a sort of davits for my dingy. I assume someone else has already invented something like this, did a lot of investigating, has drawings etc. Please come forward and help me. Thanks Frederick

Radar Arch

Check the Wells Marine web site. They have made arches for several Hunter 42's. They are a bit pricey, but you can get all the options including dingy davits built in. Bill http://www.wellsmarine.com/

I Looked Around Also This Spring

for an arch that could be used to attach the radar, dingy davits, etc. There were two things that stopped me. The first was the cost, as I recall it was somewhere between 3-4K. The other was that the ones available did not match the look, angle, etc of the factory arch. If I could have found a reasonably priced arch that matched up well, I would have gone that way. In the end I bought Ocean Marine davits and have been very well satisfied.

davits or arch

Thanks. You are right on Richard, I hoped to find some bright ideas to see de possibilities. Did you put some extra stuff like wind-gen. on your davits or on a separate pole? Where did you mount the davit? Do you have a problem hoisting your dingy with this long transom of the P-42?

Look at the new 44 - it has what you want

The new 44, hull #1 has a secound arch and it is sweet!

44?

where can I find your dream Ed. I am looking at Hunter-site but unable to find your davits on the arch. Give me a link.

44 davits

Yes they exist. Have seen, felt and admired them in person. Hull #1 of the 44 (the old 426 DS) has them mounted. They were put on it for the dealers meeting in CT this summer. They will be an option (I believe) Call hunter and ask them - May be Greg Emerson. Not sure it would work on the 42. But take a lok and I'll bet you could fabricate something similar. It is set up for RADAR so I would think you could also add a wind generator. They do exist for the 44 and they are slick! the bimini attaches to the secound arch and it is a clean instalation. I think the only way to do it though would be to remove the arch you have currently and install this new one. I am not sure that would be cost effective - but I am considering it. The other way would be to take a picture of the instalation and have a shop add this secound arch onto the one on the boat currently - seem to be an easy retrofit. The one on hull #1 is set up with davits for their Liberty dingy, but you could set it up for any dingy. One of the nice features is that you can use it a a motor hauler as well as davits. The look is clean and is a major upgrade. I belive it will be an upcharge, but if I were buying this year it would be on my boat before any other option. Not because I need the davits (store my dink on the foredeck) but just the flexibility to raise the inflatabe while moored to keep the growth off, and a convient way to lift the motor and as I said the clean look of the thing is great. If you go to a show you might see it if on the east coast as this boat will be in Newport and probably other shows. Ed

I Put The Radar On A Pole

I looked at mounting the radar on the main arch and I will probably fabricate something to do that before next summer. However, for this summer I put it on a pole mounted on center on the rear pulpit. The davits had to have the arms that extend from the rear pulpit to the deck over the aft cabin. It screws up walking around the back of the boat, but they give enough strength to the pulpit to mount the davits. The davits hold the inflatable far enough to the rear that it just touches the transome just above the water line. Not a problem at all. The Ocean Marine davits are well built and the mounting was well thought out.
