I have an extra wire smaller than the atf stay on 23 ft O'Day. Come from top of mast aft and has a small pulley on the end. Any idea what it is for???

Okay...... don't be offended... but you were obviously trying to sound "nautical" in your descriptions... so I figure you wouldn't mind a little help in that area. The "aft stay" is called the backstay. The "pulley" is called a block. (there are no "pulleys" where sailhandling is concerned) The item in question is a topping lift... it holds up the boom, the small block allows a control line to be rigged through it so the tension can be released when the mainsail is supporting the boom.

Topping lift
To rig run a line from the boom end up through the topping lift end block and back to the boom. The running end (end that you grab on to) will need to be long enough to accommodate the full range of adjustment plus some to tie it off with. A cleat on the boom end would be handy if you see yourself reefing much.
You use the toping lift on two occasions. When the mainsail is down and when you drop the mainsail to reef it. You normally do not have to adjust it much.
