ALL SAILORS------I HAVE A 1987 CATALINA 34. WE ARE ABOUT TO HAVE THE EXTERIOR WOOD PROFESSIONALY REFINISHED. I WOULD DO IT MYSELF BUT WE LIVE IN PHX. AZ. AND THE BOAT IS IN SAN DIEGO. I SWORE AFTER DOING A REFINISH ON OUR LAST BOAT I WOULD NOT DO IT AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE PRECIOUS TIME WE HAVE WHEN WE GO OVER TO THE BOAT. I WOULD RATHER BE SAILING RATHER THAN SANDING IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. MY ???? IS HOW MUCH CAN I LOOK FORWARD TO SPENDING TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL DO THIS JOB FOR ME? I WOULD ALSO WELCOME ANY REFERAL ON WHO WOULD DO THIS IN SAN DIEGO. THANKS RON AT SUNDANCE5@COX.NET

It's easy, has a long life, and looks good.

I have a 1977 Cal 2-27 that I have owned since new. I clean the teak with Clorox Bleach and Dawn Liquid detergent (1/2 bleach, 1/4 detergent, 1/4th water. Use a scrub brush and some elbo grease to apply, rinse, let dry. If really bad, might be better to sand it. Brush on Thompson's Water Sealer, usually two coats. It last for 2 years. Looks good, wood stays light, does not turn dark and thereis nothing to peel or scratch. Note: the dawn brand is important. It is the only liquid detergent that does not for some type of poisonous gas when combined with Clorox.

John, So do you have the dark look or

the lighter look? I recentl;y sanded down the teak on the outside of my boat. It now has a rather light look that I kind of like. It's different from the Cetol look I've used in the past. Does the method you use keep it light? Thanks.

exterior trim

it stays light a long time, eventually begins to gray. However, if you prefer light, just wash it once a month or so with a weak bleach solution.
