Hi folks,

I apologize if this has been asked before, but a search didn't yield anything. I just upgraded my old depth and speed gauges to a Raymarine ST40 bidata. I'm using it as a stand-alone instrument. The power cable supplied is a paltry 3 feet. What's the preferred way to extend this? Can I splice a longer cable to reach my battery, or does Raymarine sell a longer power cable? I could not find a longer stand-alone cable on their website. I will probably need around 10 feet. Thanks.

We have an ST40 depth gauge.

You're just extending power, so you are safe to splice and extend. ABYC specifies that all wiring should be AWG 16 gauge or thicker, so just buy some 2-wire #16 marine wire from your nearest marine store. The simplest reliable splice is to use crimp-on butt connectors.

Also, don't connect directly to the battery! Assuming you have a DC panel with fuses or breakers, choose an appropriate branch and connect there.

Lots of info in this forum on splicing dos and don'ts and other wiring issues.

Thanks Kenn. It occurred to me after posting that the easiest approach is to just splice the Raymarine power cable to the existing power cable for the old instrument, which does run to the DC panel and is properly fused.

Find Stranded Tin Top Coat Wire. Dual 14 or 16 gauge in an outer Jacket.
