I'm currently planning a 2 month trip along the west coast, Oregon to California. I might have an opportunity to use a Cat 27. Has anyone any experience using a Cat 27 for an extended period? I've often seen the Cat 27 referred to for day sailing or week-end use. It seems to be a pretty stable and forgiving boat and maybe an analogy would be using a truck and camper as opposed to a motorhome as far as space and comfort go. Any/all insights and experiences would be appreciated. Rick

When you going?

Whether you'll have an enjoyable time on a 27 will depend to a large degree on the type of 27 and the time you go. I sail my 27 on the NorCal for a week or 2 each year out of SF Bay. North to Bodega, South to Monterey. Never been able to ge the time to take it further, but would like to, although probably not the Oregon Trail, either up or down. Most benign time of year to sail this rocky and lonely coast (which has very few harbors north of Pt Conception) is late August-October. The area can be VERY windy off major headlands like Pt Arena, Pt Reyes, and Pt Sur. A 27 wouldn't be my 1st choice, but I'd be OK with it if we were headed south, the crew (of 3) were knowledgeable, it were in my seasonal time frame, and the 27 were well maintained and equipped right. E-mail me off-line if you want more info. I have lots I could discuss w/you... Peter Hine Selkied@earthlink.net 1974 C27, std rig/OB Stockton CA
