the way the forestay and headsail tack attach down in the anchor locker on the h23 sucks. not that i need to access it too often but 1) i am considering a furler....i just use a downhaul now, and 2) when i want to get to the anchor stuff is in the way. i'm considering taking a piece of stainless plate aprox the same thickness and about 12" long and bolting to the existing chainplate in the locker to where it extends through the handhold gaps in the doors and a few inches above deck to attach the stay and tack to....and/or possibly later a furler. does this seem feasable? does anyons forsee problems here i am missing? i know i would have to shorten the forestay by the appropriate length but that is the only issue i see.

However, I spent a few minutes trying to envision the problem and proposed solution. I can see it being practical, and perhaps necessary if you put a furler. However, my experience is that neither the forestay nor the pigtail the clew attaches to get in the way of my anchor or anchor line. with a furler you may be right but...
right now i use a downhaul and headsail bag....and am not sure yet if i want a furler, and the headsail bag is definetly in the way. of course they would still be in the way even if the chainplate was a few inches above deck. however, with the headsail "bagged" and the bag riding even 4" above that it would help when in a hurry. i have thought about putting an eye on the front of the bag too and not just the tail to attach the halyard too and then i could lift the bag from front AND rear up the forestay a foot or so and that might be plenty of working room. ...don't know....every since i saw the arrangement i just disliked it....and i've got the stainless and a disliking for unnecessarily complicated machinery. (i'm considering naming my boat "SIMPLICITY")

I agree, the forestay attachment in the anchor locker sucks. I trailor sail so I must step my mast each time out. By far the hardest part of the entire process is reaching down in the confined front area of the chain locker,trying to get both hands in to shackle the forestay. It has caused much aggrivation and at times necessitated a few choice four letter word to get the job done. Check the archives, I posed the question of a chainplate extension and no one seemed to think it would hurt. (remember you'll have to shorten your forestay.)
