Bill and Roger I agree!!! But experience is not always helpfull. I learned this the hard way when I ran aground. My experience and judgement said that if I applied a little more power that I would cross the muddy bar and enter deeper water!!!! Unfortunately the muddy bar was larger than I thought and I went harder aground. Of course NOW my experience tells me that at the first sign of running aground I stop forward progress and back off. Same thing on an overnight sail a couple of years ago. My experience had been that the wind dies down after dark and is very light after about 11PM. Well the wind was strong as it was getting dark so I used my experience and decided not to reef as the wind would soon weaken...WRONG. The wind got stronger against my experience and the weather forcast!!!! Hopefully my experience won't get me into trouble with alligators some day. So far my experience while kayaking is that alligators submerge and leave you alone when you get too close!!!! I guess this is where judgement comes into play. Somehow we must judge if past experiences are applicable to the present situation....tricky tricky!!!!

experience is best described as sea-sense, the ability to predict what is likely to happen based on what's going on right now.

Don't know where to "place" this,

as experience or judgment, but have any of you, when sailing alone, suddenly been "alerted" to something, popped up on deck and found something nearby, that was totally unexpected, and wondered what it was "inside you" that made you stop what you were doing? This is more than just the 15 minute lookout regimen.
