I was looking at the Battery Shack 100 A alternator - at $248.00 its about half the cost of a Balmar. Anyone out there have any experience (good or bad) with these units? Thanks! Jim Legere

I've got one...

Works great! great service from Battery shack. First one didn't fit so I called them and got a new one next day. Put mine in the box and sent it back, no charge either way. Pay the extra $25.00 and get a lifetime warrantee and be rid of one concern. Unit put's out a steady 70 amps when needed at 1200 rpm and meets all my needs fine. She'll ramp up to 100 amps if your batteries are really low at higher rpm and I haven't had any overcharging problems as the unit adjusts to your battery state readily. For half the cost of Balmar and a lot less hook-up (just one wire) I put the extra money to use in other areas. Tom Hadoulias S/V Lite Chop H 37C WB4PAP

Tom, which model?

Tom, Which Yanmar has your 37C got? My 1983 37C has the 3QM30. Which model alternator? Was it BS-1?

Jim, No more Yanmar...

Jim, I replaced the Yanmar with a new Perkins M30 a few years back so I cant help you there. If you call them and tell them which engine you have they'll make sure you get the right one. Look at your old alternator and measure it out to be sure, foot spacing, pulley etc... They will make sure that you fit right. I've recommended these to several friends who have been quite pleased, one is going on an extended two year voyage and liked the warrantee so we'll see how they hold up under extended use. Tom

yes

I bought one as a back up to my OEM Volvo 28HP Diesel. we sailed across the Gulf of Mexico to Florida to the new home in Miami w/o need of it. I reccommended Battery Shack to a Friend here in Miami. He used one to replace a burnt out alternator on an older boat. He loves it. He recently put an amp meter to it to check and got good readings (40amps with a CHARGED Battery / after turning every thing on to discharge the battery) He is still a friend, so I guess all is well. Anyway, my plan now is to change my stock alt. for the Battery shack and save the OEM as a spare! Happy Charging, Marc

You wrote: "He recently put an amp meter to it to check and got good readings (40amps with a CHARGED Battery / after turning every thing on to discharge the battery)." What regulates the charge from the alternator? Is it built in to the alternator, if so, how? What is the size of the alternator and the battery bank? What is the motor horsepower? How does a "charged battery" coincide with "turning everything on to discharge the battery?" One would assume that with the batteries drained FIRST, that the bank would, of course, accept a high rate of charge. How long did this 40 amp charge last? How long were the power "drains" turned on to do this? At the same time with a full charge or before? Sounds too good to be true. Please explain. It is always great to hear about new products, but before jumping to conlusions, it would be only reasonable to understand how they work so seemingly well. Thanks, Stu

Thanks...

Thanks for the feedback on the Battery Shack alternators. I think I'll order one and keep the OEM unit as a spare - like you suggest. The ice is off the cove and a sailor's heart turns to thoughts of spring...

Stu's questions

Stu, my friend installed the Alt. on an Atomic 4 (I believe 30 HP.) It supplied 40 amps. He then turned on lights, stereo etc. and the alt. kicked up to 45 amps for a few minutes then slowed to 35 amps. (This was at idle.) He then turned everything off and the Alt. dropped to 25 amps w/ no extra load. The alt. is internally regulated (built in). It was a direct replacement. The changes in amps show that the alt. regulator is adjusting output as needed. I hope this helps. Marc
