I'm looking at transporting a Hunter 38 across country (Maryland to San Diego). Does anyone have any experience with shipping? (Costs, recommended trustworthy truckers, independents, etc?).

Do yourself a favor and at least talk to these guys. They have personally hauled me twice, and I know literally hundreds of people that use and love them. We draw 7.5 feet and they have to perform unnatural acts to get us on the road without an escort but they do it with a smile. Beneteau and Jeanneau use them all the time. Price is competitive and the service is totally first class.

I had my prior boat moved from California to Florida. I used Joule Yacht Transport http://www.jouleyacht.com Very professional. At the time I used them they were transporting boats for the Catalina factory; not sure if that's still the case as it was a few years ago.
You want to check on insurance as your boat insurance policy may not cover the boat while it is being moved. In that case you should make sure the trucker (if you go with a one man operation) or trucking company has adequate insurance.

I would contact Hunter. They have their boats transported from coast to coast and would probably like to have a load heading back to the east coast.
