We bought our Catalina 310 3 years ago and have had nothing but "freak" things go wrong with it. We are starting to believe our boat is cursed. Anybody think that if we rename it (we renamed our last boat and didn't have a ceremony. First time out of the dock we crashed into the finger and a $400 gel-coat job.) we will exorcise it.

Any other suggestions?

My problem is I get distracted from watching what I should be doing,some close calls and a minor close call with another boats anchor in the next slip did give a minor scratch but that was a case of bad planning in a cross wind,people come on my boat and start asking questions just when I need to be on top of my seaman ship.
I am always nervous when docking even when its real calm but I just give each person an order either sit down and shut up or give each a job to do and if they screw up they go off the boat.
You try the the boat name but ?????????

I would not blame running into a finger pier on "bad luck".

Bad luck is having a hurricane hit you or running into a submerged shipping container. You know, the stuff OUT of the skippers control.;)

So let's hear more about these freaks things.

is it confidence? Practice, practice, practice. OK, just yet another reason to use your boat more often, like fuel polishing! :):):)

Second or third time out engine wouldn't crank and had to sail her up the creek to the marina.
After having fuel pump rebuilt, we cranked it up and the engine ran away. The kill switch didn't work and I had to go below and work it manually until it shut off.
This past April, the bulkhead between the engine and quarterberth caught on fire. There is disagreement as to whether this was a long term "drying out" problem or a hole/bad fitting for the exhaust. There as a nice little 6-8 inch hole in a direct line with the elbow joint that leads from the exhaust to the riser. No the elbow wasn't insulated, but I have checked pictures of other boats of same make and model and their's aren't either.
Yeah, I understand about my lack of skills with the first boat. That's what we bought it for-to practice with. I just tried to leave the finger with the tide ripping pretty good and when I backed out and turned to head up the fairway the tide got me pretty good.

It's well know that improper renaming can curse a boat and having a proper renaming ceremony if very important. I've never heard of failure to rename a boat being a cause of bad luck though.

However, just in case you do decide to rename the boat, here is my renaming ceremony that has seemed to serve my vessel very well in the luck department:

1) Prop a ladder up against the transom, if out of the water. Moor stern to if afloat.

2) Use a heat gun to soften and scrape off the old letters.

3) Apply new letters or pre cut decal. (The later is well worth the price if you want a good looking job.)

4) Stand back and admire for 3 seconds.

5) Go sailing.

You can tell that I'm very superstitious:)

Another way to remove the demons is proper maintainence. They hate it like they hate Jesus. Last oil change on my boat I saw a legion leave my boat and enter the boat next to mine. Don't worry that guy's boat is a piece of junk anyway.
I am a hardcore christian ready to die for my beliefs, but if I need brain surgery I prefer an athiest God hating Doctor instead of a devout washed in the blood preacher to preform the surgery.
The nugget in alll my sarcasm is that getting to know your boat's systems will get rid of those "freak" things that happen.

You should bring new Spirits to the boat... and the old spirits will leave...
A bottle of Rum, Scotch, Vodka and Tequila. should do!!!

We are also new owners (within the last year) of a recently renamed boat. We held a christening ceremony to appease the superstitious synapse that refused to quiet down, and to have a great evening while showing off our 'new' boat to our friends and neighbors.

My approach to maintenance of systems that I know little or nothing about is to study them as closely as I can. Clean it, look at it, ask questions about it... Is it clean to begin with? Is there oil or other liquid visible, should there be, if not - why and if yes - is what's present acceptable? Your mechanic calls it a 'visual inspection'. Your exhaust situation should have provided visual clues of a potential problem before it caught fire...

I was nervous about the number of items that our pre-purchase survey uncovered; since going through with the transaction and working on my own boat, I've been astounded by how many other things were completely missed! :eek:

A boat is an object, it doesn't have demons unless you've been drinking tequila.
If you feel your boat is inhabited, just pray over it in the name of Jesus, problem solved!

In regards to stuff breaking all the time, that's the way it is when you own a boat.
Anytime I needed a repair & I looked up the word BOAT in the dictionary it always seemed to mean Break Out Another Thousand:)

When I hear of a boat being possessed I bring in my favorite witch doctor and we build a fire, burn chicken feathers, paint designs on our bodies and drink mead all night and in the morning we don't care if the boat is possessed.

We don't even need to know where the boat is. We just do our thing in some convenient open place. Burning the feathers releases the spirit of the feathers into the sky and they find the boat and that the problem away. I works every time. ;)
