Came across exhaustelbow.com which makes a aftermarket stainless steel mixing elbow and exhaust manifold in one piece. Does anyone have any experience with the product?

Thanks for the Link................

If ya need the kind with the riser, :

The "exhaust elbow" folks don't appear to make a riser one for Yanmar.
................... kloudie, that little 316 SS beauty is actually cheaper than the last cast iron elbow I bought for $382.35 THREE YEARS AGO   . Even with the exorbitant shipping and using Canadian pesos, it's still going to be much cheaper.

Don't know why I haven't run across these SS units before but my present CI one is due for replacement next year and it's going to be one of these.

Granted that the mixing elbow's need for replacement is a result of the internal coking where the hot exhaust meets the cold sea water, I'm curious to see if the lack of corrosion (on the 316) will release the built-up carbon any easier. Even if it makes it more adherent, the 316 SS elbows are still much cheaper than the CI ones for me.

Ralph, I am thinking of buying one myself, just to see how it does.. They are made not too far from where you are, in Vancouver Washington.. (OK it is 300 miles) Interesting that iron itself is kind of a catalyst that converts hot heavy oils (like combustion residuals) to coke .. It may be that the stainless doesn't do that, but I'd not bet on that.. The other thing that is worth investigation is that Stainless and hot salt water are not too good for each other.. It may be that the stainless here doesn't get hot enough to cause any heavy corrosion.. I had seen someone making them out of aluminum also.. but I could imagine that may make a corrosion problem for sure.. I dunno..

Yeah, I'm trying not of think of chloride stress corrosion and trans-granular cracking. Maybe no internal stresses and maybe not hot enough to cause problems. I've got to admit mine is cool to the touch at full load.

Some years ago, I remember looking at a buried 304 SS condensate return line which was operating at a continuous 212 deg. F. The back fill which the contractor used on the bare SS tubing was Fraser River sand and was subject to tidal backflow from the Pacific Ocean. Analysis showed a pretty high chloride content. Where the tensile stress was greatest in the line, the tubing was loaded with large cracks, otherwise, looked pretty good. Not a good project from start to finish.

Every so often, SS can be funny stuff and fail when and where you least expect it. For this reason, when I install the 316 SS elbow, I'll be pulling it every year to stick my nose in to see if anything untoward is happening.

Exactly, Ralph. No real pressure stress and should have no welds to sensitize it, so it should be fine.

I was wondering this same thing. If SS is superior, then why didn't yanmar use it to begin with. Also, is SS better/worse for carbon buildup issues. What about the occasional overheating that an engine may sustain when components fail.

Still, I'd most likely buy one.

Humpy Elbow

Jon, my 3GMF has one .. I suspect the 3GM30F in the 34 would need one too.
Waterline very close to exhaust port elevation..

MZ.. Yanmar probably looked at raw material cost and decided not to.. Cast iron material is 3X cheaper than SS ..
