Exhaust vented loop spraying water on my engine

The vented loop for the exhaust (mounted on the aft wall of the engine house) sometimes sprays water on my engine while running. I can't detect any pattern to when it sprays and when it doesn't. Can someone tell me if this is normal or dangerous to my 500hr engine? How about preventative measures? I don't like pumping my engine bilge by hand very much. The engine model is: 4JH2E Thanks, s/v Catalyst

Cheap vented loop

The vented loop fitting gets clogged with salt, which causes it to spit salt water on your engine. Many of us Hunter owners have had the same problem. The solution is to get the Vetus vented loop. The Vetus unit leads the vent line to an above-the-waterline through hull fitting (which you will install). Ever see a boat with a little stream of water coming out the side when the engine is running? That boat has a setup like I am describing. After that, you can start replacing parts on your engine and transmission that have rusted because of this. In the meantime, a spritz of fresh water on the fitting before every sail will probably prevent this from happening as much, but the real solution is to put in a proper vented loop. I've heard that the Vetus vented loop is standard on new Hunters Paul sv Escape Artist h336

Vented loop needs a new air valve

A vented loop, no matter what system it's in, is only supposed to pull air INTO the line to break a siphon, it's not supposed to squirt anything. Either the air valve is missing or it's time to clean or replace it. A vent line on the nipple is not the best solution...'cuz it's a very small--only about 1/4"--line that very quickly becomes clogged up with waste or salt/minerals...turning the vented loop into just a loop that no longer has any ability to break a siphon.

Replaced Mine Twice

...with Vetus. Once on my V32, once on my 40.5. It has a place to attach a hose, but, like Peggie says, it isn't for regular discharge, it's just for those time it clogs or sticks. Just run that hose into the bilge. RD

Conflicting info?

Paul, Do you know of any pictures that describe the line? I am not sure I completely understand. It seems the exhaust line would route thru the hull twice...the wet exhaust (OEM) then the vetus line I would install? Doesn't quite make sense to me. "The solution is to get the Vetus vented loop. The Vetus unit leads the vent line to an above-the-waterline through hull fitting (which you will install)." Peggy, Ya think I can just change the line that is mounted to the aft side of the engine house? If that is the part that is clogged, then I should be fine, right. Thanks to both of you. I can't wait to get my owners manual tomorrow, maybe the questions will be answered there!

We should have given a better explanation

There is a loop of hose that you can see at the top of your engine. That loop has a curved piece of plastic tubing spliced between two pieces of coolant hose. The vent you have has a clever little one-way vent valve. It's so clever that it doesn't work some of the time. Rick and I are recommending that you replace that plastic piece with another plastic piece (the Vetus thing). The Vetus web site is out to lunch, so I can't attach a picture. You may have better luck, I am on the other side of a proxy server. West Marine carries the kind that you already have, which Vetus also makes. Vetus web site: http://www.vetus.com Grocco makes a brass version that they claim has "an oversize vent for clog-free operation." I can't vouch for it, but that's something you could install without any additional plumbing or through-hull drilling.
