exhaust thru hull

Both the bilge and exhaust thru hulls tend to submerge when under sail at any speed on our 40' sailboat. Boat is out of the water at the moment and I would like to replace the existing thru hulls on the transom with ones that have covers? or something to prevent the water from entering the exit holes. Any thougths or ideas are appreciated. the exhaust line does have an loop in it before it exits the transom but there is not one on the bilge hose.

is it really needed??

there should be vented loops for both the exhaust riser and the bilge pump(both above the water line) so that you do not get any backflow of water. My exhaust quite often is below the water when at speed. no problems....

Yeah, don't mess with the exhaust.

The only advantage to having it above the waterline is monitoring coolant water flow. Your boat will be more pleasant with the exhaust exiting into the sea.

You need to add a high loop to....

To your bilge pump! A bilge pump should always have a high loop to prevent siphoning from the stern wake that is created buy your hull as she moves through the water. There is no need for flaps!

Only need

flaps if your exhaust tubes are fairly large diameter and there are muskrats about!

Exhaust gooseneck

You can install a gooseneck...I think Vetus sells them. They are mounted on the inside of the transom and are between the exhaust hose and the exhaust exit pipe. It extends upward to prevent water from coming in.

Exhaust & Bildge

The best place for the exhaust thru hull is in the center of your transom aprox. 4" or more from the waterline [depending on many factors of the transom and where your engine is bedded in relation to the waterline, but as center as possible on transom or hull] if your exhaust manifold is lower than your through-hull in relation to the waterline I suggest a riser. If you take good care of your boat you will not have a streak running down your hull if the bildge exit as high as possible or with vented loop lower[ and loop as high as possible] Still it's best to go trough transom center as possible. Both applications need a flapper to become super efficient. Regards Rupert
