Exhaust System

Hey Everyone,

Good morning! I spoke with our Skipper this morning, and he asked me if I knew anything about the exhaust layout of the Atomic 4 on our Ship's T30; she has been poorly powered by an outboard recently as the engine has been replaced. Skipper had a specialist working on it, but the elderly mechanic suffered a sudden stroke and has been hospitalized for the last year. Because if this unfortunate event, Flyin' Anne's engine restoration has come to a standstill. For now, the only glimmer of hope is Skipper's mechanical abilities; he worked for years as an engineer for Nasa, so if he can get a hold of some information, he'll surely be able to figure something out. The main issue is the exhaust layout. Neither one of us can figure it out for our lives, and are worried about rebuilding it incorrectly. If anyone has any pictures or knowledge of how the exhaust system is laid out, it would be very much help. Thanks!

God Bless,
S.S.

A few years ago, I was helping a friend convert a sailboat from Atomic 4 power to Yanmar diesel. The Atomic 4 had a dry exhaust system, and the Yanmar has a wet system. If you are restoring the Atomic 4, you will need to run insulated tubing to the muffler, and then to the exhaust outlet. If you are converting to a diesel. you will need an exhaust riser for the engine with raw water to the riser, exhaust hose to a wet muffler, and a loop of hose to the exhaust outlet.

Came upon this thread and was wondering if any progress has been made. Also, wondering if you have now considered re-powering with a diesel?

Exhaust systems are boat-specific, in my experience, not engine-specific. Tartan is still in business, and has good customer service, but has a huge gap in their records, due to changes in ownership; however, they might well have engineering drawings for the T30. Ask for Sam Ambrose.

In addition, you might check around marinas and online for other T30 that the owner may let you examine. There's one in my harbor and I know the owner, I'll ask if it's gas or diesel when I see her.

@jviss ,

Good morning! Unfortunately, the Skipper who was originally funding the repairs to the vessel has passed away, just last week. Our ship will continue to do our best to restore the boat, but we'll have to take some time to pile up enough cash to get the engine repairs done.
