I have a 1988 universal diesel and the stainless exhaust needed welding last year and I was told to replace it soon. Would you replace with stock parts, or is there a better way? Should I replace the aqualift while I am at it?

Replace Exhaust On Cat 27-Atomic 4

I have a similar problem with our 1982 Cat 27. Shortly after I purchased the boat, we were under power and the anti-siphon t-fitting on the exhaust pipe literally blew off the exhaust pipe. We don't have a reliable boatyard @ our lake. I'm looking for a source of parts & some instructions/suggestions on replacement. Thanks!! Bill J

Send it to the factory

Robert, By your location, I'm guessing that you are near the end of your sailing season??? If so, it might be easiest to take off the exhaust riser, along with the exhaust flange, and send it to Catalina when you lay up the boat for the winter. They can make you a new SS exhaust, using the old one as a template within a few weeks. You might also want to consider getting a "single hump" silicone rubber hose for connecting the exhaust to the aqualift. It will insulate the engine vibrations from the aqualift and the rest of the boat. Also available from the factory. While you've got things torn apart, it would also be a good time to replace any suspect hoses. Just a thought.

Here's what I did

If you know a local welder, take the old piece and have him make you a new one. I was advised against making one out of stainless steel. It isn't the best choice for hot salt water corrosion. The diesel mechanic in my area recommended black iron pipe which I got in a schedule 80 for extra thickness. Going on 3 years now with no problems. This will be a lot cheaper than the factory version.
