The fabric covered exhaust section that connects the exhaust manifold to the exhaust water box on my Universal 5411 salt-water engine is apparently a customized item. Any suggestions as to where I can get a replacement? thanks. jody

this may help...

My Universal M18 had a fabric covered exhaust system that started leaking. I removed the fabric, exposing the exhaust pipe elbow assembly and was happy to find the system was made out of 1.25" galvanized elbows and pipe. Disconnect the exhaust elbow at the exhaust hose and at the engine.A quick trip to Home Depot located all the pieces I needed for about $15.00. Using two pipe wrenches and plumber's putty, assemble the new exhaust elbow. The take it to a welder to add the heat exchanger hose nipple, reinstall and you are set. You may have to replace the gasket on the engine end of the elbow, mine cost $1.25 and took a week on order. This is a very easy job and my total cost for the parts and the welder were about $25.00. Good Luck

Catalina 30 exhaust

Jody; I used to have a Catalina 30 with the Univ. 5411 diesel and had to replace the exhaust when it corroded through. The main pieces are inch and a quarter black iron elbows and nipples, available at any hardware store. Try to salvage the two pieces at the ends, the threaded piece that bolts to the exhaust manifold and the piece of threaded brass pipe with the water injection nipple brazed into it. Assemble loosely, fit into place and tighten as much as you can. Some people like to use a putty, some say it will harden into useless dreck. Any loose fittings will self-seal with soot from the inside after a few hours of running time. Wrap with fiberglass insulation, tuck the end under and trim. Use rubber gloves and long sleeves, fiberglass itches! Total cost about 15 bucks.
