Exhaust on very early Vega

I'm restoring a very early Vega (#0078). The original engine, an O-21,
was removed some time ago, and I'm replacing it with a 15hp Mitsubishi
L2E diesel. The manifold on the new engine is very small, about the
size of a fist, and I'm hoping i don't need to cool it. However, my
question is how the exhaust system on the early vega's work, if they
are any good, and what system is recommended for a diesel. From what
remain of the exhaust (from the engine backwards) there is a brass
tube, a rubber silencer, a flexible hose and a goose neck rubber hose
with a water line coming on to it just before it exits. General
pictures of the boat can bee seen in the Photo section, posted about a
month ago. Thankful for any response.

Hi:
The old 0-21 had a switch at the exhaust; normally the
exhaust water went through the rubber silencer- but you
could switch to run the exhaust through a (smaller) hose.
(only for servise).
I would recommend to replace the exhaust- the cost is
minimal compared to any problems you might have by keeping
the old stuff. Just make sure you get a good Waterlock
(Vetus) and an air vent.
Good luck, Wilhelm, V-257

Good thing there is so much knowlege out there. Think I\'ll take your
advise, trash the old stuff and buy a Waterlock. Doesn\'t make much
sense to buy a brand new engine and keep a totally out of date, and
semi-working 38 year old exhaust system. Goose neck seems to be in
good condition though, so I\'ll keep that. Thanks a lot.

Hi Bjorn

Take my advice and ditch the swan-neck. It may seem OK but there will be
tiny pin-***** holes in the elbow. Just use an extra longer bit of
exhaust hose to make a swan-neck. Tiny amount extra for that bit of
protection.

Hi Steve;
any good hardware store has bronze elbows etc. and reducers
to fit the hose diameter. Looks need, is safe, and the hose
from the waterlock comes straight to the exhaust.
