Exhaust Hose

My H31 has 2 hoses, one from the mixing elbow to the muffler and the other from the muffler to the outlet at the transom. Instead of using some kind of flapper valve at the transom to keep sea water from backing up into the hose, Hunter routed both hoses into an inverted 24" high U in which the high point is well above the water line. I figure the high arc in the hose between the mixing elbow and the muffler is to prevent water/exhaust in the muffler from being sucked back into the engine, and because any kind of short 90 degree elbow at the muffler in the exhaust system would impede the free flow of the exhaust/water. Is the preference for the high hose setup over the flapper because these hoses last a lot longer than a flapper would and replacing the flapper would be a PITA?

Not really. The flapper is an add-on that some manufacturers included, but also had the high loop on the exhaust hose from the muffler to the transom. In addition, you should have a vented loop on the exhaust water into the muffler. This was discussed just yesterday, here, reply #4:

thanks Stu. Yeah, my vented loop is in good shape. I was really wondering if there was a way to run the exhaust hoses more directly instead of wrestling them into the original contorted shapes. Sounds like the answer is "no". Might also install the flapper while I'm at it if I can find one.

Now that I look at flappers, it would have to be a thru hull which would mean completely removing the existing hose nipple at the transom. All in all a major job for what Hunter, and now I think provides little return.
