Exhaust hose smell

It seems I have a strong odor coming from the exhaust hose. It doesn't smell on the end where it connects to the engine, but on both ends of the muffler, the hose smells bad. Anybody have this problem before? I plan on replacing the hoses next week (I hear they are expensive) and am wondering if there is something else causing them to smell bad that I will need to replace as well so I don't ruin the new hoses. Thoughts? 1996 Hunter 376.

Oh yeah

I forgot to add...the smell is terrible when running the engine, but a day later the hose still smells bad.

Describe the odor...

Burning rubber? Strong exhaust smell? Rotten eggs? Does your muffler include a catalytic converter? Engine exhausts are not really my area...but I might have an idea anyway...

The smell

It seems to smell like rotten eggs on the hose going into the muffler and have a little burnt smell to it on the way out of the muffler. Doesn't seem to have a catalytic converter. By the way, this is a 3 stroke desiel engine. Hose is a C2 252 2000 wet exhaust hose. I looked it up and they seem to cost $12 a foot :(

I think you need a good diesel mechanic

'Cuz something is happening that shouldn't. A rotten egg odor is hydrogen sulfide, which is a lethal gas in high enough concentrations. A burning rubber odor coming out of the muffler ain't good either...the smell of somthing burning usually means something IS being burned/scorched. So before you decide to just spring for new hoses that could very quickly start producing the same odors, you need to find out what's causing 'em. In fact, you may not need new hoses.

Exhaust piece

Which brings me to another question. The exhaust from the engine comes from the engine, through I guess it's called the exhaust manifold, to the Y ???? where the water and exhaust meet. That piece between the engine and the Y has some strange wrapping on it...some kind of patch work I guess. Where can I get one of those? I bet that is the problem now that I think about it.

Hi Franklin,

Did this start all of a sudden? Was that a typo about the 3 stroke diesel? No such thing.

opps...3 cylinder

I think it's been doing it for a while...I've just finally found the source of the smell.

It's time to do what Peggie suggest,

get a good diesel mechanic. That rotten egg smell is usually thought of as coming from batteries that are being over charged.
