exhaust cooling for yanmar 12

I have the mighty Yanmar YSM 12 on my Cat. 30. The exhaust cooling is as follows. A straight steel pipe from the engine about 24 in. long where it angles down to a plastic tank about 2 foot square. The exhaust is then fed into a hose to the stern. Apparently this is for cooling purposes. However, prior to entering the tank a water hose is connected to the end of the 18 in hose. I assume this is a jury rigged mixing elbow. So my question is can I eliminate that plastic tank & its cumbersome plumbing & rely on the water hose itself for exhaust cooling? Gracias in advance...

That plastic tank is your muffler. Maybe consider getting a new vertical manifold, nipple and mixing elbow that mounts to the engine and run exhaust hose to the muffler and set it up correctly. I know those parts are all still available for the ysm12 because I just bought them. But, if what you have works than why bother.

That is a common plumbing arraignment on that boat with that engine. Keep what you have, and keep it clean and you'll be fine.
