Exchanging a PHC LBA for a Jabsco on Hunter 28.5

My 86 Hunter 28.5 has a Jabsco head which I would like to upgrade to a Raritan PH-II LBA or a PHC LBA. I have read that the PH-II will fit if a Jabsco fits. However, in checking the measurements on my boat I am not certain. Has anyone made the switch? The Head compartment on the Hunter 28.5 is very small. The footprint appears to be fine, but the pump handle may be too long. The PH-II has a horizontal handle and it looks to me that if it is placed on the left side of the bowl it will interfere with the door and if on the right it will be difficult to get to the seacock. I would love to know of anyone who has the PH-II installed on a Hunter 28.5 and how it fits?

I'd remembered the PHC as having a shorter handle, but couldn't find a different part number on their website for it. Smallest head I put one in was a Cat270, I'm only 5'9" on a good day and I had to leave the door open to sit. I think if there is room for your knees it will fit.

The PHC uses the same pump as the PH II, but on a compact base and with a shorter handle to fit in a tighter space.

You'll find the dimensions for the PH II here: Raritan PH II

And the dimensions for the PHC here:

Peggie, I had found that site for the PHC, but it refers me to the PH-II measurements. It does not tell me the difference in the handle length. The PH-II shows the handle is 19.5 inches from the back wall for the Marine size bowl and 22.25 for the household size bowl. Do you happen to know what the dimension from the back wall is for the handle on the PHC LBA using the Jabsco bowl?

The smaller "standard" size bowl is the same size for every mfr...the larger "household" (formerly known as "highboy") bowl is the same size for every mfr. So it's gonna be the same distance as the same size Raritan bowl.

I seem to remember that the PHC pump handle is 4" shorter than the PH II pump handle. Vic Willman ("Headmaster") will be along some time tomorrow to confirm or correct that.

The handle for the PHII is 11" long; the handle for the PHC is 8 1/2" long. But c'mon guys, this isn't rocket science - the handle is tubular aluminum. If you need it to be shorter, do you have a hacksaw?

Thanks for the information. One other question before I order the LBA. There is a link on this site for the bolt template for the LBA. Do I need to remove my Jabsco bowl to verify the bolt pattern or are all the Jabsco's the same and I can assume will fit? Finally (hopefully) what is the difference (other than the handle length) as far as this conversion between the PHII LBA and the PHC LBA? From the write up the pump is the same, you have clarified that the handle is shorter, so is the footprint for the PHC smaller or the same as the PHII? From the dimensions in Rairtan's literature I know I can fit the PHII where the Jabsco is except for the handle being too long. It will be tight and my knees will barely fit. Since Rairtan does not furnish the dimensions for the PHC I do not know if it would give me more leg room particularly since I will be using the Jabsco bowl. I guess the bottom line is I am looking for advice as to which unit would you recommend for the Hunter 28.5 with a small head compartment? Thanks again for the help.

Re: Phii Lba

The mounting bolt pattern for the PHC and the PHII is practically identical. The PHII requires (2) additional mouting bolts (total of 6). The PHC only has (4) mounting bolts, but the center-to-center distance for the mounting bolts is the same for both bases. As far as apace requirements go, the primary difference is that the PHC doesn't have the 2 piece ornamental cover over the base, so it takes up a little less space that way. Aside from the base cover, spacewise, they're pretty much the same. The PHII also has a drilled pad with (4) holes in it, between the pump and the bowl, to accomodate an electric drive unit, should you wish to add one in the future. The PHC doesn't have that option. But the drilled pad doesn't add to the speace requirement in any way. See page 4 in link to Owner's Manual for mounting footprint: http://www.raritaneng.com/pdf_files/ph_II/L04v0505.pdf

PHC footprint is the same as the Compact II footprint...

'Cuz the PHC uses the CPII base. That's how they get it to fit in a tighter space! And somewhere in the PHC literature they tell you that.
