I have a 5411 engine with the original muffler and it is giving up, the inlet has been replaced and I can not get the fiberglass tube to seal to the muffler box. Does any body know an easy replacement for this (aqualift muffler?) How do you remove the old one? Thanks,

Vernalift

Hey Jim, I got a vernalift for my C-30. I've got a Yanmar, but that shouldn't matter. The Vernalift cost me about $120, I think, and it is VERY well made & very effective. I'd highly recommend them. Check them out at BoatUS: http://www.boatus-store.com/browse/item.asp?IID=27528 Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

Muffler

Jim, I had to replace my muffler about 8 years ago. The biggest problem I had was finding a muffler with the same size connections. My boat yard in CT had a catalog but I do not remember the brand. There was only one with the right size connections. The old muffler is just screwed to a mounting board which I think is glassed to the hull. Hope this helps.

mine was shot. My dealer pulled it out and rebuilt it at his fiber glass guy's shop. Better than new. Parts and total labor in & out was 175

Try Catalina

I'd call Catalina. If they don't have a replacement, I'm sure they know what works best. Before spending $$ on replacing I'd definitely get a repair estimate.

Jim; If your original exhaust pipe is rusting out, replace it with common black iron parts from the hardware store. Try Marine-Tex on the fiberglass tube to box joint.

Muffler repair vs. replace

I have an '82 C30, and went through the same problem - cracked inlet on the aqua-lift. I replaced mine, with the aqua-lift from Catalina Parts. The replacement has the same physical dimensions as the old muffler, and the inlet/outlet joints appear to have been beefed up from the old. Going through the work of removing the muffler & exhaust pipe, I decided to replace the muffler rather than repair the old with epoxy or Marine-tex, as suggested in previous posts. I did not want the potential of having another crack develop, and then having exhaust fumes (carbon monoxide) exiting into the cabin through the crack. I also did not want to do this again for a while. Replacing the aqua-lift was worth the piece of mind. The muffler is screwed down at it's four corners. You will have to remove the exhaust pipe (I also replaced this too) to remove the hoses from the muffler.

(update) its fixed

I want to thank everybody that responded. I decided to try to fix the inlet tube again, I used west system epoxy on the tube going into the box and it is holding now. I used a dremmel tool and really cleaned and scarified the surfaces. I went for a trial run yesterday and the bilge is dry (OH happy day!!)as this has been my goal for a long time. Thanks, Jim Nixon

Muffler Inlets & Hump Hoses

Jim Glad to see you repaired it. I did ours a few months ago with Marine Tex. One thing to keep in mind is the reason the lip cracked in the first place: it's because of the very stiff black hose that comes from the exhaust pipe. Call Catalina and order the newer 1 5/8 inch diameter blue hump hose. Only Catalina parts has this hose in this diameter, as you'll see from looking in catalogs. Most of the ones for sale are 3 inches and bigger in diameter. While we have an M25 engine, it sounds like your 5411 may be similar. You need to know the diameter (confirm the 1 5/8") and the length. They sell them at about 8 inches long, and you can cut it down. All the hump hose is is a less stiff but just as strong hose, it's light blue, with a little shock absorbing bump (hump!?!) in the middle. I repaired my muffler lip and installed the hump hose, no problems since.
