Getting quotes on new sails for my 28.5. I want affordable performance oriented sails for mostly crusing and a little racing on a freshwater lake. has anyone heard of Endurance sails by Elvstrom Snobstad. This is a structural sail built like their Genesus but less cost.also I talked to a Doyle rep about Max cloth by contender. It is a dacron, mylar-pentex, dacron lam that is soft, durable, and can be crosscut for savings on construction. He said it is better than straight dacron. Comments? He would give more of a racing cut than the crusing sails available on this web site.Jeff

Sobstead makes good sail's matter of fact North,UK,Doyle,Sobstead,Quantum,Haarstick,Hild,Banks and so on all make great sail's. Some are faster then other's. Some make something the other's can't. But as far as good sail's ther all good key is getting good service that is the biggest factor. Most sail makers have all the measurements for the boats some will have boats that they have made sail's for and the sail's are real fast and they will corner the market on that boat design. I have beaten guys with brand new sail's with my 3 year old UK Tape Drive's. I think it just comes down to what you like and the best service you can get. They used to have the Sailmaker Challenge using Melges 24's not sure if they still do or not. But all the top sailmaker's would show up to show off ther fast sail's. Cliff

Local Loft

Here is my thought on new sails. Custom built by a local loft is the best way to go, in my opinion. Your local sail maker knows your local conditions, will come out measure, design and build your sails. He will then come out and install them, make adjustments, if necessaryand then should sail with you a few times to test the sails. As far as fabric goes. It all comes down to cost and what you can afford. If you can afford a suit of kevlar/mylar sails then go for it. If a compromise is required then the sailmaker will guide you.You seem to have a good feel for what is out there, it is also impressive that you are shopping wisely and seeking thoughts from others. With all this information you will make the good decision for you. Again, the key as I see it, is go with the best local loft for the added service you will get from them.

The Sail Warehouse

I purchased new sails for my H23 at The Sail Warehouse after getting quotes from a number of lofts. Their sails are made by Rolly Tasker in Austraila (or maybe Thailand, they have a loft there too) from U.S. dacron and they are nice sails. They were pretty economical too.

local loft

We do not have a local loft in SW Missouri so I have to work with lofts over the phone. I do want economy but I want more than your average crusing sails and fnow that I will need to pay more. I do not want to pay for radical sails though, just a good racing cut in a durable fabric.Jeff
