Evinrude with some kind of alternator?

As most of you know, I just started boating and restoring again last year.
I hope it's not dumb... but here it goes.....
Here's the question: My 22ft O'Day came with an Evinrude 7.5.....and it has...some type of alternator wireing......
I'm not sure how exactly it works or functions. Does it get hooked to the battery? Etc..... Does it actually do anything?
I always appreciate your answers.

I've had two oldish Evinrude's: a 6hp and 8hp. Both had charging units that connected directly to the ship's battery. I seem to recall, however, that they had a relatively low (i.e. 5 amp) output. This meant that unless you ran the outboard for a really long time, you could not depend on it to keep your battery(ies) fully charged.

We also have a "charging" output on our 5 HP Suzuki 2-stroke outboard. It's also in the range of 5 amp output. I plan to connect it up this year.

According to the Suzuki service manual, it's dirt simple and isn't regulated. It's still possible to overcharge a battery with 5A, so for that reason the manual recommends that you only connect it up to flooded-cell lead-acid batteries, which can withstand overcharge better than AGM or sealed batteries.

You can of course add a charge regulator if you want. A friend of mine has simply added a series resistance so that the current is never more than 2 A, unless he bypasses the resistance with a switch.
