Everyone's thinking or doing.... WHAT?

It is getting quiet on the forum.

When it comes to our boats - what's happening to you? what are you thinking or doing now or for next season?

Mine is in front of the garage being cleaned before being put on the side with the winter tarp. If she doesn't sell we may not put her in next year - instead, fulfill my wife's dream of Montana with the three grand $$.

So, no matter how boring... What's happening??? We kinda have a family here and it's only strong when we chat -

Re: Everyones thinking or doing.... WHAT?

Chingaletta is tucked away under a custom fitted ( reasonably priced) canvas tarp at the boat yard. Currently awaiting a new Hyde Main sail and dropping hints for new low lead genoa cars from the fat guy in the hat.

It's a long wait for sailing to return to Buffalo so we are heading to the Keys in mid January. A family get away, actually able to get both twenty something kids at the same time for a bit of sailing, a few planned dives at John Pennacamp park and some frosty adult refreshments.

Happy Holidays to all

Re: Everyones thinking or doing.... WHAT?

My ship is tarped and hopefully ready for this weekend's 6-12" of snow. This winter can't end soon enough...

My Xmas wish list was for LED nav & anchor bulbs. If someone out there is extra generous, i'd like the steaming/ deck light combo upgrade. I spent a lot of time night sailing last summer, and am sure to do even more next. But I want to make sure the solar panel can keep up with my lighting demands. Another issue I need to address is my engine blocking the stern nav light from the port side when i'm under sail and the engine is lifted and retracted out of the water. It's probably more of an issue for me because of the oversized engine that it came with (15HP).

The other project is to add some cleats right in front of the stern pulpit. Since you guys taught me about cross sheeting here on this forum, I do it all the time. So I want the flexibility to cleat further back into the cockpit to leave the seating on the windward side open. I kinda mapped it out while sailing, so I think it will work.

Re: Everyones thinking or doing.... WHAT?

My boat has been in storage since September and I am fine with a long snowy winter! Don't get me wrong, sailing is great, but I am also a big snowmobiler. The 6-10 inches we are supposed to get this weekend has me giddy! Sailing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter always gives me something to look forward to. I guess I have the best of both worlds.

Re: Everyones thinking or doing.... WHAT?

WendyBird is under a tarp and hunkered down until April. Ice was forming along shore today despite the wind and right now it's 12 degrees outside. If the wind dies down, I think my part of the lake will freeze tonight. The big projects for next season are to install some electronics, fair the keel and put on some VC-17. I got a small chart plotter for my birthday and picked up a fish finder on craigslist. My trailer also needs some attention. It's really just a yard dolly, since the boat launch is only a few miles away, but it's getting pretty seedy looking. Oh yeah, I need to order those vinyl graphics for the name.

Right after the kids clear out around New Year's Day, we will be driving to Delray Beach in Fl for the rest of the winter...golf, tennis & fishing. We also have a week booked in the BVI on a Sunsail 444 with three other couples at the end of January.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you all!

LOTS of work starting.

Scuppers are cracked, THAT'S where the leak was coming from...

So the metal has come out, and I'm filing it all out to make my new sea-dog one-way scuppers fit... crossing fingers.

Snow this weekend, Matt?

Guess I should get "Ophelia" under a tarp this morning.

After successfully using a 100 watt solar panel to recharge the batteries for the Torqeedo electric motor while on a mooring, you will have no trouble using a solar panel attached to the forward hatch to recharge your battery. I have been using a Ganz semiflexible 12 watt panel (http://www.cbcamerica.com/microsite/res ... es0911.pdf) with a good MPPT charge controller (http://genasun.com/all-products/solar-c ... ontroller/). The panel can be walked on and can conform to slight gentle curve.

It's been a busy travel year so many sailing projects have been delayed. The house addition is underway. It all started with a desire to screen in the porch. (Thank you for the design work, Matt. Both the contractor and building inspector are happy.)

I did pick up two project boats - a Ranger 29 (another Gary Mull design) and a Tripp-Angler 22 (I know, it's a motor boat, but it's a diesel powered lobster boat style and could be used as a RC boat). These two boats came as a pair. The price was low since the boats were "disassembled". The previous owner had started to restore them when he died. He was a carpenter and his father who originally purchased the boats and was a mariner by trade (got to see many of his certificates starting in WW2).

The Ranger has stand up room in the cabin and an Atomic 4 engine. I will pull the engine later this winter (the cabin area is stripped of all amenities so access is easy). Reading about it the Atomic 4, it is very much like the engine in my CJ2A Jeep (I have rebuilt these engines before). The hull needs the bottom paint removed, barrier coated, then probably new paint for the upper sides. But that will depend on how well the gel coat looks. The insides can wait a bit to put in the "pretty cushions and curtains". The sails are in decent condition and still quite crisp. I paid $600 for this boat.

The Tripp-Angler needs much more work. I originally didn't want to take it but the estate agent pleaded with me and gave me enough other things to justify the $300 price. The boat stands alone were worth the price. I tried to turn the motor by hand but it didn't turn. After researching the motor (Ford Leman 4L diesel), I understood why! There is a lot of compression in this engine that is as large as the one in my Grand Cherokee. This is going to be a total hull-up rebuild - just in time for retirement in a few years!

This past summer I got my O'Day 19 back to sailable condition and repainted it using Interlux 2-part polyurethane paint. There are a couple of small tasks remaining - just received the replacement smoked plexiglass windows (need to replace the ones on my Capri soon). This is the sailboat my wife and I first learned to sail on. It is easy to trailer, rig, and launch. It is more stable than a dinghy and sails similarly to a Rhodes 19 (similar Portsmouth rating). We will be using it when we want to visit different areas.

Four years ago we found a Cape Dory 25 that my wife told me to buy because she liked the classic design and woodwork (sometimes it is good to listen to your wife). Its hull was full of blisters. It was my first real experience with epoxy and barrier coating. The process has been slow - partly due to learning, partly due to having a Capri 22 that was in sailing condition (we kept going sailing). I have stripped the inside (similar to this link http://www.reefroof.com) to thoroughly clean and refinish the interior. The original plastic windows were in need of replacing. We purchased a set of opening bronze ports. These are not exact fit. The four smaller ones need the rough opening to be enlarged. The two larger ones need some of the rough opening length reduced. My fiberglass/epoxy skills have improved to finally do this. My unplanned work travel kept me from getting time to do it last summer.

So, for my Capri 22, not much needs to be done. I will remove the fixed gooseneck and go back to the sliding one. I will move the traveler to the cabin companionway area. It will be an experiment. I am not a hard-core racer and would like to hear less complaints from my short legged wife. Beyond that, "Ophelia" is pretty well set. The The Interlux Micron Extra antifouling worked very well. It is a multi season coating. A few places need some touch up. The bottom was almost clean when I took it out of the water after six weeks of no sailing. It cleaned off with a garden hose the next day. Even better, this ablative paint did NOT rub off on me through out the whole season like others had. It was worth the extra cost in my opinion.

Okay, as Matt mentioned, it is time to get the tarp on "Ophelia" before today's storm hits.

Re: Everyones thinking or doing.... WHAT?

Verboten is already put away for the winter. That said, I'll go check on her at some point this weekend; spot checks from 1/4 mile away as we're going to work show the tarp to be in ok condition, even with the 6" of snow we got. I need to put some dessicant aboard and hook up the solar panel I never reconnected after I parked her for the winter.

Spring project is grinding out the through hulls forward and filling the holes. I'd like to strip, barrier coat, and repaint the bottom but I think I'll probably leave that for another year. First I've got to find a place and a way to get the boat off the trailer.

Too early to tell what next season will bring. If we get enough rain to fill the lake then we'll be sailing down there as often as I can get there. If not then we'll be doing a road trip somewhere.

Well;

Waiting till spring to put my traveler on.

Right now nature is testing my tarp. So far 2-3 inches of snow, with another 5-6 expected tonight.

Well this past year has been a lesson.
I couldn't get myself motivated to sand the bottom and repaint - but once done, there is a sense of accomplishment.

I guess it's been so long since I have created anything that I've lost the sense of the reward at the end. There was a lot done with the mast being rewired and the plug being replaced and the bottom... I need to find this passion for longer projects - they can be quite fulfilling. I can't imagine doing some of the things I've read about here, I respect your energy and stick-to-itiveness!

Now that we're empty nesters, It may be time. I did find a Force5 on the other side of the Chesapeake that I'd love to fix up. I think I can manage to get it into my truck by myself and dolly it to the beach... There are good sailing days when my wife (nurse) works. I'd love to work the wind in a Force5 yet on that same day would not go out in the CP22 due to the fact the I'd be fighting a max ebb or flood tide/current in the canal that is dangerous for single handling of getting it into the slip. oh and one eye, no depth perception, make it a seriously focused event!

Hersh - I'm down at the mouth of the Delaware River - two hours east of DC, 5 mile from the ocean.

Hey Rob, do you miss your little Capri 16.5 as much as I do sometimes? Sure wish I could have kept it and have the Capri 22 too.

My two projects are...

1. Make a new anchor box to hang on the pulpit.
My milk crate works great, but I want to clear the side deck and push the weight forward.

2. Make a filler-board for in the cockpit.
I'm making some boards that sit between the cushion rails.
This will make the cockpit one big berth for summer sleeping!

The "someday" project will be to make an effective single-line reefing system!
Maybe even with a lazy-bag arrangement!!
...how cool would that be?!?!

Yes Chris I miss a planing hull - But I also like a Lasor or Force5 for it's simplicity and ease of setup, but it is generally a solo act.
I have relived many memories of sailing the 16.5 - The day after hurricane Earl with 25+ winds that had the bow diving into the water (until the three of us were sitting side by side, back at and almost inside the tiller length) then she popped up and launched off a little wave. Thrilling and terrifying, on the edge... love planing hulls.

I miss my 14.2 but only a little... Took that thing out myself just before a thunderstorm. My brother and my nephew took out foam snarks (11ft). We got 25mph winds (those snarks have 1" alum spars, so they just bend when the winds come up, call it self-reefing), I ran main alone (but full up)... got some wild gusts couldn't tell you how much, except that JUST before the storm opened up on us, I was surfing and planing downwind centerboard half-up, and afraid to turn up knowing for sure I'd just be swimming. I was kicking up a 2-3 foot wake behind me! Great little boat.

Later on I bought a bargain ($300) used Zuma 12 footer (every bit of 6 foot wide), after I sold my 14.2... like a moron I took it out on a nice warm May day... winds were 15 gusts to 20mph... My fat keester in an 12 foot boat (figure it'd finally be enough wind to really move)... I got halfway across a lake that was probably still every bit of 55 degrees, skipping across the water like a stone... I decided halfway out that it was probably NOT a good day to swim! Came back to the launch ramp as quickly as I left (on a reach, with water spraying through the centerboard)... It was at that moment I decided I had graduated to a keel boat, or at least that my centerboard boat days were limited to VERY warm water days. Like an idiot I sold that boat... THAT was the bargain boat I should have kept (sold it for $200 more than I bought it for!).

My next boat was the Capri 22... and now the Capri 25.

Hey Shnool I started my sailing in the US in a Snark! 1970 (I was 12 and a half) - I came back from Norway where I watched how to sail in an optimist dingy and the learned/taught myself in the Snark/Styrofoam bath tub. My very first self taught lesson, the dagger board is not for keeping you upright, as I sailed sideways into the next dock! Oh, that is what that is for... and off I went. It was the best thing that ever happened to my mother - and it was her friend that bought it! In high school I fine tuned the rest.

I live in southern NH, halfway between Nashua an Peterborough. We sail out of Winthrop MA in Boston Harbor and belong to Cottage Park Yacht Club (an active sailing club). It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there without traffic. My wife works in Worcester so getting to Boston is easier than if we sailed out of Portsmouth NH.

We also go to Lake Champlain (Burlington VT) for a week most summers. I have family in the area.

Matt W lives 15 minutes away from me. He sails up north in the Lake Winnisquam and Winnipesaukee waters.

That's not the funny thing about the snark...

My father bought me the snark when I was 11... brandy new (on sale) from Sears (as Sears was the only place to get them back then)... the year 1982! Price was $150. It was my birthday present...

What was funny about the story is my brother was sailing MY snark that day in 2005, in the 25mph gusts!

What's still funny is he still has the boat... the sail needed to be replaced (so he made one!)... but it still works/sails.... it has so many dents in the styro, that it probably has more bottom than a 40 foot trawler... but it still sails!

That darn boat has been with the family for years... his son sailed if for several years at the same sail club near Charlotte, NC on Lake Norman when HE was a kid, where I sailed it when I was 11. We moved a lot, so that was ironic as well.

For my College graduation, I set that boat in my back yard, placed a keg in it, raised the sail, and dumped ice in the hull, PERFECTLY chilled beer... The ring is still in the hull from the keg!

Great little boats... oh and when him and his son sailed the snarks in the storm... he was pulling into the campground, and saw another one for sale, for $100, and he bought it on the spot for cash... it was the "super snark" because it had the ABS plastic cover (which of course trapped water between IT and the foam, so it weighed in at like 3 times the weight of the foam one)... The stryofoam boat weighed in with a hull weight at 11 feet of wait for it.... 30 lbs.
