Late summer is the best time for evening sails in Minnesota. Pleasant temp,. reliable breeze, and awesome light. For you too? Post your sailing pix!

We head out in glorious light.

Sun on the way down.

Heading up the lake in 9 knots.

On the way home. Spin as it starts to get dark.

Masthead also illuminates the windex.

Final light of the day

Lights of home on the horizon. Be there in 45 mins is the breeze holds.

Thanks for the story and photos, Jackdaw. I was out last night as well, but was more focused on the sail and company than taking pictures. The Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron was lovely. You're right that in northern climates, we appreciate our brief time in the sunshine. We can look back on your pictures in another four months when we can *walk* out there!

Beautiful night on the water tonight. Perfect temp, mellow wind, great company - just sublime.

Still a bit hot here, but there is hope! Love the shot of the warm light down below and the instruments lit..

Hi Claude, yes that one came out surprisingly well. I just point my iphone at stuff and press the button; no idea how it will come out. It does do a good job of showing the juxtaposition of the warmth and safety of the boat vs the dark unrelenting water. The spin sheet banjo'ed to the cabin-top winch is a bit of a distraction, but that's OK.

OK, so we will put them in order:

These were earlier in the evening. If you see the BLACK shoreline in the background, yes, that is all we could see with out naked eye as well. We knew our campsite was somewhere in that blackness, but where?? As we got closer to shore, I called my wife on the cell and had her shine a light out of the trees, so I could aim for the cove. Once it got totally dark, I could see the lights along the shore, but when the sun was still out, I couldn't see anything other than black.

Now the last two photos have a story. Headed out for a night sail. We were hoping to see stars, as we were in southern IL, far from any lighted city. Anyway, the moon dominated the sky, so no stars, however it was still a pleasant evening. With the moon so bright, my daughter suggested Beethoven Moonlight Sonata, which we did not have. I suggested she Skype her best friend and have her play it for us. She didn't use Skype, but just the speaker phone, and her best friend gave us a private serenade of Beethoven Sonata no 14. Yes, it was only the speaker phone, but was still the highlight of our vacation.

Evening through sunset sails are one of the highlights of having a sailboat. I'm going out after work with a group for one tomorrow. I have an album of sunset sail photos on my profile page.

I hate to say it, but you see the sunset on Galveston Bay through the skies over the Houston area to the west and the smog/pollution adds some spectacular color sometimes.
Here's some from the last month or two.

Great sunset pictures. The Milwaukee shot looks like home. The Galveston Bay one looks HOT.

We really haven't done a late evening sail but are going for an almost overnighter next weekend. Sunday night is the total lunar eclipse starting here in NJ at around 8PM and lasting till 1:20 AM. We plan on going out about 6-8 miles and hopefully get a full view. Rum rations are already prepped. Will post those pix when we return. Any advice or suggestions?

Not only is it a total lunar eclipse but a supermoon as well. I have to figure out how to get around all the gridlocked traffic from the Pope's visit to get to the boat Sunday.

You'll be seeing the effects of earth shadow. Come to Lake Murray, SC in Sept. of 2017 and you'll see the effects of moon shadow. Can you tell I looked at your profile?
