Espar Heating

Living aboard here in Boston. Need warmth!!! Seriously, I have been looking at all types of heating. With the CNG stove, I have no need to introduce propane, so I am steering faway from propane cabin heaters. I love the idea of the Espar diesel heater, however I was looking for input. They seem to be popular among other liveaboards at the marina I'm at. Is there a noticable diesel smell? How does the installation affect the resale of the boat? I looked at another H40 with a furling mast when I was buying, and the $5000 to $10,000 furling mast added very little value to the boat. Tough pill to swallow. Is the heater the same thing? Any Espar owners out there, your input will be much appreciated. Sean Haven

I assume you are speaking of the forced-air unit, rather than the circulating-water design. My air unit provided great heat! It's kind of noisy, in a constant, white-noise jet engine kind of way, and it can leave some soot on your hull. Be *sure* to have an experienced espar installer do the job. But, like many after-market upgrades, it isn't worth what it costs in terms of resale. It can help your boat sell faster, though.
