Ernesto is packing a little more punch than I thought it might. Currently getting 45-50 knot gusts on the wind guage on the roof, straight out of the east. Only caught the tail end of this gust that pushed her over quite a bit. Trying to get a movie...

We survived Isobel with only one mooring line

chafed badly enough to need replacing. The kids got a rope swing out of it. The surge did a lot of damage to the marina. The ramps to the floating piers were bend and twisted so when we wanted to reach our boats we had to monkey down some tricky places.

Andy, Is klamath lake near Klamath falls

Oregon? If so drive out to Astoria on the coast when a storm comes out of the gulf of Alaska and hang out near the beach. It can be rather impressive.

movie time

Not quite the back yard, but I think you can get a good feel for the power of the ocean, at least. Sorry, no sound, I took it with my little camera.

No fun today!

Today was one of those days when I wish I liked golf! The news is we had significnt boat and marina damage as a result of the surge. I got third hand word my baby is still afloat, we'll see what tommorrow brings. No power at the marina and no way to get to it with the flood. Looks like the Thomas point bouy is going off about now, hope ya'll in the Northern bay fare better than Isabel.

Harv, It has been a couple of years now

and not all of the damage from Isobel has been repaired in the upper bay. We don't have as much big water here as you have around the Rappahannock. Ross

Rigging howling

Had heavy rain for two days due to a stalled front prior to the arrival of Ernesto on Thursday late evening. Forecasted landfall was dead on target as were wind speeds and surge. Prepared Carolina by removing Bimini and double checking all dock lines. (We routinely use eight, two bow, two stern, four springs). Went to bed around 10:00 P.M. after checking slipmates on B dock. Winds were steady at 21kt., gusting to 35kt. from ENE. Was awakened around 1:15 A.M. by wind shifting to SSE and increasing to 35kt steady with very heavy rain bands. Talking heads on tv warning of tornadoes at Moorehead City and South River.Walked dock again. Helped skipper of 38 ft Carver with his lines; his swim platform was gouging the dock and port bow was bouncing on the finger. Got thoroughly soaked in spite of my foulies. Fished a small inflatable dinghy out of the fairway as it floated by. Began to feel slightly nauseated; I became seasick on the wildly tossing floating dock and had to return to the boat to get out of my soaked clothing and recover. By 5:00 A.M. winds had shifted to SSW/SW and were back in the 25/30 kt range, still heavy rain, but no tornado warnings. Wind driven surge had earlier risen to sidewalk level at the dock house but was now receding. By 7:30 winds were around 20kt from SW with very scattered showers. Looking around the marina damage mainly consisted of torn biminis. A small Bennetaeu had chaffed free on all but one line, but we were able to secure it with the bits and scraps of the chaffed lines. A new homebuilt fibreglass dinghy washed overboard from the dock and sank, still attatched to the dock by a chain. We could not recover it at this point due to the current running under the dock. Everything considered, folks at Bridge Point made out O.K. Steve Kamp H38 Carolina

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
Scary storm!

I weathered the storm from Culpeper while I was at work but I had gone down to Colonial Beach the evening before to secure everything on my boat. I took all the canvas in, moved all of my cushions away from the windows, and put extra lines on my boat. I am so glad that I did this. The water had gone three feet over my dock during the storm. I had my boat tied so that as the water went up the lines would push the boat further into the middle of my slip. The boat next to me lost his awning. It was hanging on by one strap. He was to starboard of my boat and the wind was blowing from the port side of my boat. Another boat in my marina drifted over the docks and came to rest on the dock as the water went down. This wasn't on the peer that I was on but there were small amounts of damage on other boats (ripped canvas, marks in gel coats, etc.). I am really glad that I had put the time into storm prep. If anyone saw the pictures that were taken at Cobb Island (directly across the Potomac From Colonial Beach) you would known why I say this. The pictures were on the news for the Northern Virginia Area. I hate hurricane season!

Ernesto is passing well West of the tip of Long island, but the high pressure off shore is resulting in gale conditions out here. In our very sheltered harbor I estimate we have been getting gusts over 30 knots and the forecast includes gust at 50 knots in the Montauk vicinity. We'll see.

I went to the marina this morning at low tide

but the water was as high as a normal high tide. There was no damage as far as I could see. Some trees lost a few leaves, there is no sign of any flooding. For us this was just a rainy end to the week.

Ahhh ... sunshine

I have barely seen any in about 10 days! Rain may have filled up the lake enough to invoke the "no wake" rule for the balance of the weekend.
