Erie, Oswego canal return trip north.

Spring is in the air, or at least in my mind. Starting in a couple three months I would guess that the Great Lake sunshine sailors, who sailed south for the winter, will be making their return north. I would like to take a couple days and visit somewhere along the canal and watch part of this migration. Within the next couple years I plan to make this journey myself. I am looking for suggestions on the timing of this visit as well as the best places to set back watch and enjoy.

I grew up living near the Erie canal in Rochester, NY and Spencerport NY both are great places to sit by the locks in small towns and watch the boats go through-The locks on the Barge (Erie) Canal are up all summer not restricting the water flow,but in winter they come down. In fact you can rent a canal boat for a time period and just go from town to town on the canal.
