I am now down to two boats.....a 2000 Bavaria 35 feet and a 1981 Ericson 38'. I like the Bavaria because it's newer, roomy and well priced. I like the Ericson because of its reputation, but it's older than the Bavaria by 19 years, but in excellent shape. Assuming they're similar in price, which one would be the better boat to buy? We're planning to cruise out of San Carlos. How about resale, perhaps in a couple of years? Which one would you buy and why? Thanks!

Go Here

for a way to compare the two boats performance: http://www.image-ination.com/sailcalc.html Only you can decide if the difference in age is meaningful, or if the interior is set up the way you want it.

I'd go newer

Everything being equal...I'd take the 2000 Bavaria versus a 1981 Ericson.

tough question

One one hand the Ericson is about done with standard depreciation but I'm not sure why they would be compareable in price at this point. Are Bavaria's really going that cheap and why so? On the other hand it sure would be nice to have a boat built in this century. The newer styling of lighter woods is very nice. Myself, I bought a 1981 30' Ericson for 15K and put 5K into it and would take it anywhere and don't see how I could lose too much if I wanted to sell. Think about your exit if you wanted out, or if you want to keep it forever what will last. Another thought might be how much of a mechanic/plumber/electrician are you?

Easy if you're married

If you have a partner get the one she wants!

It's the systems

an older Ericson might have been upgraded by a PO to actually have a working electrical system for cruising, where a newer (anything) boat may still have a standard OEM alternator with internal regulation. What do you plan to do with the boat? Only you can answer that. PS Do you have a brother named Darryl? ;)

If your married

you have no choice but to get what she want. I know I didn't. Don't buy a 20 year old boat. You asking for problems! Did you get a boat review from Pranical Sailor yet. You can't go by a bunch of Yahoos on a message board (me included).

yeah, why are you asking us yahoos?

...You're only asking for a bunch of replies like this-- At the risk of being, um, indelicate on the social class issue, let's pretend for a moment that one was well off enough to have apparently owned several sailboats and is now down to just 2 (including one recent model still worth 20% of a $mil). My thought process might wander to some other possibilities besides just parting with one of them: 1. Wear out the Ericson sailing it to San Carlos (see, this is where the social class thing comes in: I run in the circles where I need the country name to know where that is...), then cheerfully sell off what's left of it and return home to enjoy weekending on the Bavaria at the mooring forever more; 2. Sell the Bavaria, deposit the cash in your checking account, and as you're sailing the Ericson around the Caribbean (I assume San Carlos is in the Caribbean?!?) pay cash for a pretty island to build the retirement home on. 3. Offer the Ericson to your favorite charity and sail the Bavaria with a feeling of total spiritual and moral liberation; 4. Give me the Bavaria. 5. Give me the Ericson. And remember, one of the great advantages of being a person of means is never having to care what the yahoos think...;D

I'd buy the one you had to sell because

of cash flow problems. That way I could offer a low ball figure knowing that you didn't have time to negotiate. It grieves me to think that you have this dilemma but I am sure that with your experience you will find a solution.

Hmmmm.... similar in prices?

I just can’t see a 2000 Bavaria 35 and a 1981 Ericson 38 have similar prices. How does that happen? Has it seen the bottom of a bay or marina?

ericson v. bavaria

The foregoing not withstanding, your trying to compare an older Buick to a modern BMW. The Ericson is old-school design with a deep, narrow hull, small main and large genoa, while the Bavaria has a shallower, wider hull with a deeper fin/bulb, a much more open interior, modern pumps/hoses/fittings/sails/lines/mast/standing rigging/etc. Without looking at brochures or data sheets, I'd think the Bavaria would have a larger main and smaller genoa, which is easier to sail, IMHO. But then, you could be just yanking everyone's anchor chain...

I think San Carlos is in Mexico...

Make a left out of San Diego. Which boat to buy? It depends on which crowd you want to hang around with; the satellite, plasma TV group or the rum and water, lets go snorkling group. Your call.

My mistake, there is San Carlos in California

a metropolis of 28,000. In that case the Bavaria may suit your style.
