Mic fry

I am interested in the 27 foot Ericson and would like to know what are the pros and cons are of this boat and also what type of keel they have and how deep. I am looking for a little bigger and stiffer boat but I have to stay in the 27 to 28 foot range due to the slip size in Dana Point. My Hunter 25.5 is a great boat but I want an inboard and a wheel and a little bit more weight. thanks "MIC"

Why not a Hunter?

I have been sailing a Hunter 27, 1980 Chrubini design since 1987. It has all the features you might be looking for. Check out the specs.....I'm sure you wont be disapointed.Let us know what you think.

Not stiffer.

Mic: My experience with Ericsons is that they are NOT a stiff boat. They heel over faster than the Hunters. Be sure that you sail on one before you decide. I think that the later models that were built after the original company went out of business may be stiffer, but they were bigger boats. If you want a stiffer boat, look at the Hunter Cherubinis 1974-1983 models as a place to start. The later models have larger engines so that would be something that you want to take into consideration as you look.

My experience with a 27 Ericson

has been mixed. I now own a 27 Hunter Cherubini which IS a stiff boat. The Ericson is a little on the wimpy side for my tastes. It does not point as well (even after total adjustment of the stays), it tends to be a bit too lightly built to be as stable as the H-27, and it has a split cockpit, which I, personally, do not enjoy having to work around! If you can find a 27 Hunter, you owe it to yourself to - at least - look. Good Luck!

I Had A Ericson 27

Before I bought my Hunter-30 (1991) I owned a Ericson-27 (1971). It was a good boat but age was catching up and it required lots of maintenance. It was a deep full keel. Not particularly fast but a comfortable day sailer and good for trips to Catalina (as long as there were only two aboard). I am not aware the 27' ever came with wheel steering as I think this was only on 29' or larger. When Ericson went out of business Pacific Seacraft bought some of the Ericson molds and built under the Ericson name. But, I think they manufacturered nothing smaller than 34'. If you consider a Ericson 27 it will be an old boat, probably without wheel steering but the advantage is there are some good ones in So.Cal. in the $6000-$7000 range. Personally I would look for a newer Hunter.
