The only hull to deck connection appears to be the tabbing on the inside of the hull and deck. The screws that secure the rub rail on the outside have de laminated the end grain of the deck balsa. I have some alligatoring on the external vertical fiberglass surface above the deck. I wonder if the alligatoring is a sign of stress. I'm tempted to eliminate the rub rail, and glass the hull and deck together on the exterior. Thoughts

I glassed the hull/ deck joint on Bietzpadlin

It was a lot of grinding and fairing but now I have no concerns about the joint leaking. I removed the rubrail and dug out all of the bedding compound between the two pieces. I then ground the flange and gel coat back to get a smooth transition and to be able to get a glass to glass bond. I used polyester resin(no wax)and chopped strand mat and woven cloth in alternate layers. I think I went about 6 inches each side of the joint and then faired that work. About five years after I finished that I decided that I still needed some rubrails. So I had long 3/8 inch nuts welded to 2x3 inch 16 gage SS plates and glassed those to the hull and hung 1x3 white oak on those with round head screws and fender washers. edit to add: Bietzpadlin is an Islander 30 from 1968.

Hull to deck conection.

I assume the construction on the Islander 30 and the Ericson flush deck 39 are the same?

Bill ,They appear to be. The Islander had an

in turned flange on the hull and an out turned flange on the deck. The two pieces were bedded in putty and pop-rivited together.
