I'm looking at repowering an Ericson 39 Bruce King. The old engine is a Westerbeke 4-107. I am curious if a Yanmar 3JH5E be sufficient? If not I will probably go with the 4JH5E. Is anyone running this setup or something similar? Thanks for any input.

Brad:

I believe that the equation for this is about 1 hp/ 500lbs. If you are going cruising you may want to think about a little more HP rather than less. Assuming that you boat is about 20,000 lbs, you need at least a 40 HP engine, so something in the 45-50 may be a good idea.

If you are not going to take her cruising I would think that you can get by with a 3JH and a good prop. Be careful when they try to size the prop. I would always suggest a prop shop make the recommendation (not the engine installer).

If you want to stay on the least expensive side, you may want to consider a Campbell Sailor. Otherwise the sky is the limit on a feathering prop if the budget permits.

What does the Ericson 39 displace? My H37C is 18000# empty. My 3YM30 pushes her at 6.5 knots while hardly working at 2500 rpm or so. Sweet engine, very small and light. Everything is in front and accessible. But I agree with Steve, if you are over 20000 then 40+ sounds right.

Here's a link to a Westerbeke engine on Ebay.....I think the owner posted this here a few months back.....It's probably the same foot print and a nice engine for your boat

The old 4-107 was a Perkins based block the newer Westerbeke engines are Mitsubishi based and the foot prints are different. I have a 44B Four and it has been a flawless engine but would not necessarily be drop in.

Ours is 44Hp for 36 feet and about 18.5-19k loaded displacement. I would not want anything different for the tidal rivers we often have to ply. I would think the 39 would do will with 40-50 HP. Depending wher you sail less might be okay too. If you are between a three and four cylinder I would strongly urge you to go four cylinder as they are very, very smooth..

You might also look into Beta if you have a dealer near by they can often supply you an engine that will "drop in". The 4-107 was quite popular so they may have a set up just for that motor.

A 4-108

A 4-108 is a direct drop in replacement. Motor mounts bold right up, tranny too. More HP than the 4-107.

Get the most HP you can afford. I have never heard anyone complain that they have too much HP.
