My own inspection of a pending purchace has uncovered keel bolts of questionable condition. Yes am awaiting my surveyior, his opinion etc, but I want to know if any body has attempted a " fix " on a boat other than Catalina. Read about the Catalina's lag bolt fix...On the Ericson, only 2 are visiable, which would mean coring the floor liner to maybe get to the keel. What I think I am seeing is a threaded corroded socket where a bolt was! X 2. I want to cry, it is a beautiful boat but I may be walking. The bottom line, if what I am looking at is true, is to get a cost from the yard and deduct it from the boat price, if I want this boat. Any thoughts?

reality

Bill, I think you have a very real picture of what is going on and if you want that boat, aleast you have a plan. I would make sure the surveyor is knowledgable. I would also get a yard to give you a firm price and a description of their plan to repair the possible problem. You can look at it as a repair or an upgrade. If you do it right it should be better than new. In the end, remember that you want a good nights sleep. Good luck with your decision. r.w.landau

Keel bolts

Bill - As a practical matter, people's keels don't generally fall off unless from a n exotic race boat. On the other hand, I am one of the people who went through a lot of grief to renew my keel bolts thise winter. I would want to know what's going on in the substrate in the area of that missing bolt. If there is really a missing bolt with a hole into the keelson, the risk of serious water intrusion is very real. Maybe nothing; maybe terminal, particularly if water has been in there and frozen. Like you say, get the survey and a firm price from the yard, but remember the nice part about shopping for a production boat is that there are more of them. It is no fun at all wondering if your keel is safe. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Ericson 27 Keel

The Ericson 27 has an encapsulated (SP) keel so the lead (or steel depending on year)was cast out of the boat and then placed into the cavity. These keels are not held on by bolts. If this boat is in good shape buy it as they are great boats. Bob
