Hi, I'm considering an ericson 1984 25+. I plan on doing daysailing, some weekending maybe. Shallow area of west central fla. I know how to sail but this would be my first sailboat. I want to know the general quality and safety of ericsons from unbiased sources. I have downloaded info. from practical sailor, cannot find any other reviews of this boat. It is shoal 3'11" draft. Has inboard Yanmar 8 which I t hink is 8HP, too little oomph for a 5000# displacement boat? Has wheel steering, sails in good shape, seems to be well maintained. Has 2 batteries...a bit of water damage from a leaky forward hatch but seems to be a past problem. Any opinions on this boat, how it sails, overall quality and safety? Thanks a ton Doug

8hp is plenty.

i started a rebuild on a E27, was impressed with the original construction. The deck-fittings are never sealed right at the factory, i recomended removal and rebed in 3M 5200 of all the deck hardware. Otherwise, the erricson small boat line is really good.

I formerly owned a Ericson-27 and sold it only because I wanted a larger boat. It was a solid boat and I was impressed with the workmanship. Never had any problems other than the usual maintenance items. A Yanmar 8HP should be plenty of power on a '25.

Even paranoids have enemies...

and even biased opinions can be true. Ericsons are of quite good quality for production boats, and have a reputation for good performance and solid construction. If you have read the Practical Sailor review of this boat and still wonder about it then I'm not sure what it will take to convince you, as they gave it a relatively glowing report. Depending on where you are going to sail it, the shoal keel could be a plus or a minus, otherwise it is hard to do better in a 25 footer of that vintage.

thanks

Thanks for the info., I appreciate the additional opinions. I went out for a sea trial today on the boat, the diesel malfunctioned, began spitting blackish sooty smoke, RPM's dropped and we turned around and went back to the dock :( The owner said in the 3 years he's had her that hasn't happened, so he's going to have a diesel mechanic look at the engine and generally give he and I a status report on the engine. So I'll have to wait. (I was going to have a diesel mech. look at the engine anyways for me prior to a purchase so it might work out ok....as long as the engine isn't in too bad of shape). Anyways, I'll try to keep you posted. Doug
