I've got a 9.5 foot rib with a 15hp. motor and was wondering for that size dingy what are the CG requirements besides PFD's? Flares, horns, fire extinguisher, etc?

I've attached a link to the CG quick

reference, but basically under 16' you just need lights at night & fire extinguisher if you have enclosed or onboard fuel tanks. Oh, and appropriate certificates, tags & numbers.

What is not Clear on That Site

Is Navigation Lights. If your boat is capable of doing more than seven knots you must have the red/green and all around white light which also must be more than one meter above the red and green side lights. A Coast Guard Auxiliary Courtesy Safety Check would help check this link to find a guy near you http://nws.cgaux.org/visitors/ve_visitor/index.html

Follow Federal, State, and Local Laws

Ted is pretty much on target. I am a certified vessel examiner with the US Power Squadrons. Keep in mind you will need to comply with all federal and any state or local requirements in your area. You can check the COLREGS for specifics on the Federal requirements on lights. Part C, Rule 20 covers Lights and Shapes. Section (b) specifies that rules for lights must be followed from sunset to sunrise. Section (c) also specifies that lights, if carried, should also be used from sunrise to sunset if visibility is restricted. The bottom line is that navigation lights are not required for your dingy unless you operate from sunset to sunrise. If you do have navigation lights on your dingy, they must be operational. For your situation: - State Registration and Numbering required - PFD Type 1,2,3, or 5 for everyone on board. - PFD Type 4 not required, but recommended - Fire Extinguisher may not be required in your situation, but I wouldn't do without one. - You will need a sound producing device - a good whistle is great to have, at least for a backup. - Visual Distress Signals may not be required if you operate in inland waters. The Coast Guard will require them if you operate on the coast, and I recommended for nightime operation. Here's the linke to the COLREGS

Another Good Idea,Though not Required

Is an anchor. if your motor stalls and your drifting into a channel or out to sea it will keep you in position while you get cranked back up. A handheld VHF is also handy As for the lights. My understanding of the Nav Rules require them on your dink. You might not ever be stopped for not having them but the battery operated ones that clamp on also make a good back up for the mother ship.
